Finger nail injury information

Hi

My 5 year old caught my 3 year olds middle finger in a door last Saturday. Initially the fingernail started to go black but he was able to move it so we just monitored
On Tuesday morning we noticed pus collecting at the bottom of the nail so took him to minor injuries. They said it looked infected although thought he didn't need antibiotics. They dressed the finger using inadine.
I then took him to our GP this morning as still wasn't happy with how it looked.
They made a needle incision to drain the blood from nail and prescribed antibiotics.
All the blood (which was awful) has gone but there is still some pus under there. They think he will lose the nail potentially.

My question is - how does this pus drain if the finger nail does stay in tact (although unlikely)? Has anyone had this experience?
I have popped a picture to show what it looks like now (sorry!).

Thanks
