Green poops

Baby is 10 weeks, exclusively breastfed. Started having green, mucousy poops a week ago (2 days after norovirus vaccine, if relevant…?), including once with a long string of blood. He also has a bit of a runny nose but is otherwise happy and healthy.

GP Checked him over 6 days ago, couldn’t find anything wrong. Suggested trying to cut out dairy in case of CMPA.

I’ve been dairy free for 5 days now, no improvement. Does anyone know if that’s long enough to rule out CMPA? I miss chocolate! :p

Any other ideas on what could be wrong? The GP wasn’t overly concerned but did say to come back if symptoms persist. I’m trying to get another appointment but it’s looking unlikely before September. I’m unsure whether I ought to push harder or whether this is ok if the blood was a one-off.

CMPA can take two weeks to stop reactions from memory. Soya also produced a similar reaction in my DS.

But it could also be a cold/virus? I would go back to the gp if it happens again.

It’s hard with babies as can drive yourself mad trying to find the cause of something!

Is the infant gaining weight well?

Is it just the once or frequently?

If not thriving, there is a thing called starvation stools where stools can be green over a period. Might be worth feeding more frequently and building supply to accommodate increased need. That’s quite common and not a serious issue if supply is increased.

The best thing would be speak to your HV. Many GPs really aren’t terribly experienced in baby feeding, but HVs should be.

The green poos have been ~6 times per day, for a week. The long string of blood in the poo was just the once, a week ago.

Weight gain has been good:
9lbs3 at birth
11 lbs at 6 weeks
13.5lbs at 9 weeks

I didn’t think supply was an issue, but I can increase it at all.

I guess I’ll stick with dairy free another week as well, on the off chance…

Managed to get another GP appointment tomorrow and referrals to a paediatrician and lactation specialist in a couple of weeks if needs be! Whew!

No HVs where I live in Canada. Midwives follow you for the first 6 weeks postpartum but then you need to see a family doctor or a paediatrician. I’m hoping they’ll have some answers though!
