Any doctors about? What’s a normal iron level for a toddler?

DS had tests for something else last week, all fine, but had blood tests as part of it. We just had the letter which said all fine but low iron and he needs to be started on a supplement immediately, so I’ll be phoning the GP first thing Monday morning.

His iron is 6.1 and ferritin is 16. They didn’t call me or anything so I presumed non urgent but I’ve looked online and it seems 6.1 is really low?!

He’s fine in himself, eats well but doesn’t love veg eats a decent amount of red meat and fortified cereal and has a good varied diet. He’s not sleepy or breathless in fact he’s constantly on the go!

It doesn’t say he’s anaemic in the letter and I was just wondering if anyone could advise until I can speak to someone on Monday?

I'm a little bit confused what question you're wanting advice about - it sounds as if they have said his iron is low and they are planning to prescribe supplements?

Apologies, I was just wondering whether his level is very low? I’m a little confused as he has quite an iron rich diet so was wondering if it’s just a little bit low or very low

I’ve had a letter with the low iron info I haven’t actually spoken to the doctor yet.

It is below the reference range - have certainly seen lower ferritins which are the more familiar measurement.

Big milk drinker? Sometimes catches people out. Hopefully they can check through some advice when you get the chance to ask, hope it all gets sorted.

He’s actually dairy free due to his eczema, so not a big cows milk drinker at all.
Hopefully a supplement will sort it out and there’s no underlying issue which is my main worry

No one here can comment because you haven’t included the units of measurement (which makes a big difference). The doctor who’s advised you is in a far better position to interpret the results.

Hallomother · 01/08/2021 12:57

Ah I see I wasn’t given the units of measurement it
Literally says iron 6.1 and ferritin 16 on the letter nothing else
