Wheezing In Young Baby

HaNNaHC92 · 24/07/2021 20:18

My son is 10 weeks old. He's had a cough and cold for the last 5 days and up until today has just been sneezing and coughing. Since late afternoon he has developed a wheeze when breathing. I know it can sometimes sound like a wheeze when they have some mucus that needs to be dislodged but it doesn't sound like that, it sounds like a proper wheeze. As of now, he isn't struggling for breath and he's feeding as normal. Although this is my 3rd child, I've never had my other two children have wheezing with a cough and cold. Shall I just wait it out for another day or two? Do I need to take him to see a doctor tonight? I'm really not sure what to do, so any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Call 111 tonight, do not wait with such a young baby.

Phone 111. My DS2 had something similar at 5 weeks - was broncolitis. Apparently there are a large number of cases at the moment. Babies go down hill fast (they also recover quickly).

Thank you both. I rang 111 - started ringing at 8.30pm and have just gotten through 10 mins ago. Got to wait for a call back now from the on-call GP and go from there. Will update a little later.

@HaNNaHC92 How did you get on? With a baby that young with a wheeze A&E would not be OTT - keep an eye on breathing rate & without a vest on see if they are pulling in/drawing in at ribs, neck etc -

I managed to get an appointment at 1am this morning in a hospital in another area. He's been diagnosed with a chest infection and has been prescribed Calpol and some antibiotics for 7-10 days. I've also got a phone review tomorrow and Wednesday to see how he's doing. Whilst in front of the doctor he starting pulling in his ribs whilst breathing so I need to keep an eye on that, but the doctor was happy to let us come back home. Thank you for asking also!
