12 week old won’t stop crying

I have a 12 week old. Since yesterday he has had periods of high pitched, screaming crying. He’s not been himself at all, not as smily or playful as usual, short naps and he’s wanting feeds more often than normal.

He had his 12 week jabs on Wednesday, so four days ago. Wednesday he was mostly fine, but really upset in the evening. Thursday he was sleepy all day. Yesterday and today, he’s clearly in discomfort and I fear pain.

I gave him calpol last night and it clearly made a difference and calmed him down. We’ve given it to him twice today - once earlier today and the second time a couple of hours ago on the advice of 111. Again, both times he stopped crying, so he is in pain or discomfort somewhere for the calpol to make a difference.

111 said a clinician will call us back but it’s been over an hour and still waiting for the call. He’s fallen asleep for now, but I don’t know what to do. This isn’t his usual cry, even when he gets distressed he doesn’t cry like this or for this long.

Sorry to hear that your little one is so upset and unsettled. I remember when my eldest was like this, the A&E doctor said it was gastro. But when there was no improvement the next day, I went back and they tested his urine and it was a UTI and we needed antibiotics (interspersed with probiotics).

Something to test for if there's no improvement.
