I am surprised the pharmacist gave drops - I thought they couldn't under 2.

I remember when my DD got it for 1sr time after starting nursery we had to get 2 lots of drops.

Also it may be worth changing to the ointment- I found that easier to administer.

I think they recommend cooles boiled water now rather than salt water. And probably try and bathe 3 or 4 times a day.

I would however give your GP a call and see what they say. Won't do any harm.

I think the instructions say to seek medical advice if it is more than so many days on the drops and there is no improvement.

It also worth considering that it might not be conjunctivitis - my eyes are playing up at the moment due to pollen/tree spores. It can be quite hard to tell between an allergy and conjunctivitis - even for health professionals.

Thanks well her gran dropped the drops and now they're empty so I'll have to go back anyway 😂
Really I've been doing the old salt treatment 🙈 suppose it's not done us any harm ! Will go back to pharmacy tomorow thanks guys

Both my children have conjunctivitis that wouldn't clear up with chloramphenicol they need fusidic acid drops but you can only get this on prescription from your GP.

Jenny2020 · 27/05/2021 22:21

@bumperthumper can I ask how long you waited the drops out to see if they worked ?

Cool boiled water does the job just lovely and salt will help to take the swelling down (it's just tears innit) - soak a cotton wool ball and wipe once from inner corner to outer corner, and bin it straight away. Just use one cotton wool ball per wipe, per eye.

I've tried the eye drops with my 3 and also on myself and never found them to work over the years. Also they travel to the back of the nose where you can taste them- they can make your throat sore. (I'm not a quack and I do totally believe in medicine btw!)

  • That should say, never found the eyedrops to work any faster than the cool boiled water method. Should be totally gone in 3 days.

@jenny2020 last time I know the gp said you should see an improvement within 3 days of the chloramphenicol. it has been a number of days for your lo so I would definitely be going back and asking for fusidic acid now.

Jenny2020 · 30/05/2021 08:00

Thanks guys ! We were seeing an improvement but it actually looks like it's going back the way !
Typical now that the docs are closed untill Tuesday ! Will continue with the water & drops untill then and phone ...
I didn't actually get the drops from the gp I got them from the pharmacy so hopefully we get it sorted
