dental buttons & elastics

Does anyone else's kid have these and willing to share your experiences with me?

DS9 got referred to the orthodontist to get two buttons on his front teeth and one button on the back of his upper tooth with elastics looped around them to encourage the top tooth to move forward. He was due to have them for 3-4 months. It's pretty obvious that he needed it.

But he's had them in less than a month and it's been nothing but a pain in the hole because he got them put on on the 13th April, then on a couple of weeks later two fell off so we returned the next day to get those replaced (last Thursday.) Literally the next morning one of the new ones fell off again, but it being a bank holiday I couldn't call the orthodontist, so rang them yesterday, OH brings him there this afternoon and this time the new button with the stronger glue fell off again, literally 3 hours after they were put on. He ate chickatees and a crossiant - both soft things and he was careful to keep the food on the opposite side to his buttons.

It's a 45 minute drive to get there. Plus we live in Ireland so I paid €500 on the first appointment for these, (fair enough the subsequent appointments were free) but we've also had to take time off work to bring him there.

What I want to know is, are these buttons prone to popping off, or is it that the Orthodontist isn't putting them on correctly? Could anyone who has any experience of these braces share their stories for me?
