Still ill after 3 weeks

My son has been ill for a while now. His symptoms started showing before the easter holidays just cold and flu like symptoms, runny nose, coughing, sounds like he has a blocked nose when sleeping causing staggered breathing. Thought just a cold from his nursery but none of us around him have developed a cold. Either way now we are in may and he's still got the symptoms and he's coughing up phlegm and being sick after coughing. Had a telephone appt for him 3 days ago and they said mild croup nothing given or no follow ups. What will annoy me is if they tell me its croup again because symptoms of this don't typically last a month. I'm thinking to call 111 tomorrow but in the meantime has anyone else's child had these problems?

Assume you Covid tested?

Any allergies?

Doesn't sound like it's presenting like croup although mine had spasmodic croup but I believe it can be chronic.

Yes, mine. For nearly six weeks now. Been diagnosed with an ear infection and then croup and then a "viral infection". We took our child to A&E as they weren't breathing properly, as you described, and were admitted for a few nights with low oxygen levels. Given strong antibiotics and an inhaler. The doctors did say that this type of illness was becoming very common in children as they had been isolated for so long and then suddenly exposed again to a variety of illnesses.

@milkybarkid10 should also say my child is also two and it was the staggered breathing that you describe that caused concern at A&E. Is your child sucking in at the ribs when he breathes? Even if this is just at night/ when coughing? We were told to go straight back to hospital if this ever happens.

At first i did wonder about covid as hard as the test was to complete it was negative. He had the test before the Easter holidays. And to be honest I haven't really looked to see if he has been sucking in at the ribs i will take a look as I didn't think

Hay fever? Are his eyes red? First we knew was my dd had blocked ears affecting her hearing, no other symptoms. Affects little ones differently to us. Timing fits

milkybarkid10 · 02/05/2021 23:03

Wow didn't realise hay fever could do that. His hearing is very sharp and no red or watery eyes

Coughing in bouts that lead to vomiting can be whooping cough and it goes on for 3 months or so. It could be an allergy as pp said , occasionally prolonged coughs are due to inhaled small toys or food;whatever the cause I would try to talk to your regular GP if that is possible at your surgery . If not, another Dr at the practice and then stick with them.it is a bit unusual to cough for this long and you need someone to understand the whole story and to follow up.
