Hi everyone. So my little girl for 4 weeks has been taking omeprazole as suspected reflux. Been a bit of a nightmare trying to give it to her but she has taking it. But for the last 4 days refused point blank screaming the house down chocking on it and spitting it out. But I haven't noticed any signs of reflux considering she hasn't taken it for 4 days. The GP told me to start weaning her off it as she shouldn't be on it this long. But I'm not sure what to do? And not sure if she has even got reflux also any time she now cries or is out her routine I automatically think it's reflux but this is also the same week she had her injections. So could just be me thinking to much in to it and just worrying. If anyone could help or give me a bit of advice would be great. Many thanks.

I would listen to the GP regarding weaning her off it if she’s not meant to be on it that long.
What are her symptoms?
She could be cranky after her injections but normally just for a day or two

How old is your daughter?
If your GP is the one who prescribed the omeprazole then I would take their advice and wean her off the meds. In my experience injections and teething both made the reflux symptoms reappear but it was always temporary and manageable without having to go back on medication

Sorry just reread your title and saw little ones age

I would personally keep her off a few more days if she's getting distressed when you try to give her it and just keep an eye on any symptoms and see if they do return, hopefully not!

Well her symptoms before the medication was when she was asleep she would make a straining noise all the time as if she was trying to poo but wasn't. She also would drink constantly and be sick every time she had a feed or if you laid her down she would be sick. Not projectile but it use to run out of her mouth. She also used to arch her back a few times. But since not having it she hasn't done any of that and even when she was on the medication sge was still being sick but not as much what I've found with her the more she moved about or on car journeys she sick more. If she kept still she not sick.
Well the health visitor told me she had to be on it for 6 month then the GP told me to try and wean her off it. But she won't take it at all. I even put it in a tiny amount of water in the bottle and the last time she toom that was Monday. And now she knows what's coming. It's heartbreaking to see her in that state that's why I haven't tried to give it her today.

Also I think she is teething as well as she chewing her hands and rubbing her cheeks also a lot of dribbling and more irritable when she putting her hands in her mouth. But I've also noticed since injections she become a lot more vocal when she wants feeding or if she annoyed and at same time putting her hands in her mouth. That's not anything to do with reflux is it. Xx

My daughter has been on omeprazole for 3 years so I don’t think a few weeks is something to worry about.

Spit up is normal, OP. I was told that reflux is something they will grow out of by and by and that there's no real need to medicate for it unless they're distressed by it. If your DD is more distressed by the medication than the reflux, I'd say stop. I'm not a doctor though!

miliie55 · 01/05/2021 21:41

The reason the doctor wants her off it is because it absorbs the nutrients from the milk. My GP said he wld only put her on it if she was losing weight etc. We had gaviscon which made her constipated and then had to use laxatives too.

Eventually another GP prescribed her omeperazole but she was about 7/8 months by then so on solids too.

I'd just leave her without it if she seems ok. My dd would projective vomit without her meds, she cldnt keep her milk down. I stopped her on medication just before a year as I wanted to see how she was without it and she was fine by then.

I had the same problem and my HV got me one of these it was brilliant - worth a try x

My dd has had quite bad reflux since birth as in quite a bit comes back after every feed. Paediatrician hasn’t given her any medication as she isn’t bothered by it.
We did try carobel but that’s a bit tricky because she is bf. If your baby is bottle fed carobel is definitely worth trying as significantly less vomiting occurred when dd would take it. For bottle fed babies it’s mixed in with the formula
