Hi!! My first child had a speech delay and now age 7 is a remarkable little boy so when my youngest wasnt starting to talk i wasnt overly worried. He started talking about 3.5 years old and turns 4 next tues.. however he has started to stutter. He sometimes turns bright red when trying to talk and gets upset, for the last few days hes started not saying anything. I have contacted speech and language and we will be sent an appt at some point. Has anyone had this and can offer some words of wisdom? Hes generally a very happy loving little boy. Albeit mischievous compared to his older bro 😂 Xxxx

Stuttering or stammering CAN be a normal sign of speech development. This is usually when the brain is way ahead of the mouth in the things the child wants to say/express. There’s lots of tips to help, simply slowing him right down. Telling him it’s ok, you’re listening. And engage with him as closely as possible, maintain eye contact etc so he doesn’t think you’re distracted with the stuttering. And tell him sometimes you struggle to get your words out too (I know I do - haha). Singing also usually helps with a stutter. Get him to sing something he is trying to say. Usually, once their mouths catch up to the speed of the brain it resolves itself.
I’m totally not a professional this is just what I have experienced in my progression and should always listen to your Speech professional.
