High temp in 13 year old

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 10:01

Dd has had a high temperature since Wednesday. She’s not eating and has had a little diarrhoea but in its own I don’t really see it as a tummy bug and other dc haven’t caught it. Sunday am here temp was normal so we thought she was getting over it but last night she was 39.2 (38.8 after calpol) and then this morning she’s normal temp but very lethargic with no appetite. Dh called gp for advice. We have 3 dc so have experience of illness and this feels odd. Gp called back and was totally pissed off sounding asking what we expect him to do. I thought a high temp for this length of time without an obvious cause (I don’t feel the small amount of diarrhoea matches the 6 days of a high temp but obviously dr thinks I’m totally wrong) was a concern. Dr just made us feel like bad parents for bothering him. I guess dd isn’t on death’s door and we’ll monitor her but he seemed so flippant for a dc he hasn’t seen from a family who hardly ever call him. He hasn’t seen dd1 for years so we’re hardly regular time wasters! Anyway, not really expecting answers, just cathartic to vent.

Have you organised a covid test?

hauntedvagina · 15/03/2021 10:06

Get a Covid test, an upset stomach and a temp are two symptoms.

DavidsSchitt · 15/03/2021 10:09

I'm assuming you've had a negative covid test back so know it's not that...In which case yes, I'd be a bit perturbed at the doctor speaking to me like that and ignoring a child with a 5 day high temp.

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 10:16

Sorry I should have said - negative lateral flow Tuesday, fell ill Wednesday pm then negative pcr on Thursday through the hospital I work at so not that.

I'd suggest you do a full test. Sometimes if the test is too early in the illness it's a false negative. That's why initially (as far as I remember) they were suggesting to do a test on day 3 of symptoms.

Many other countries list stomach problems as a key symptom.

Yellow85 · 15/03/2021 10:56

Hmmm very odd. I thought after 5 days of a fever the doctors want to see them. Can you NHS111?

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 11:48

Nhs 111 said to call my gp. She’s has calpol and temp is now normal so we’ll watch and see. They won’t redo the pcr as she’s had one.

They should do the PCR again as that’s the advice if symptoms persist. Three days later IIRC?
Any other symptoms other than lethargy? I guess if not covid then perhaps do either virus and just fluids and rest for now.

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 11:56

No other symptoms which is why it’s odd. I wonder if there’s a hidden uti. It’s very unusual for her and she’s hardly been anywhere but I guess she’s more vulnerable having been home since January.

Ibuprofen is better for temp control than paracetamol

Yellow85 · 15/03/2021 11:59

Can you call after 6pm when GPS are closed? I’m in Scotland so not sure how the service works where you are?

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 12:17

Sadly we have a severe allergy to medicines with “Fen” at the end in the family so we don’t use it just in case. Dm was hospitalised when I was 9 after taking a nurofen pill. It rules out ibuprofen.

Worknoplay · 15/03/2021 12:31

If her DD has no appetite then no to Ibuprophen. It can irritate the stomach.

Notavegan · 15/03/2021 12:33

That's not appropriate of your gp. I'd expect them to check her over and urine dip etc

OverTheRainbow88 · 15/03/2021 12:36

My son had a temp of over 40 for about 6 days and then suddenly woke up day 7 and totally fine! Still no idea what it was- I also called GP twice in that time who wasn’t bothered!! But I agree it’s worrying when no other signs.

Have you checked every where for a rash?

OverTheRainbow88 · 15/03/2021 12:36

Could you ask to take in a urine sample?

m0therofdragons · 15/03/2021 14:54

Her temp is normal right now so I’ll wait and see if it goes up again tonight and if it does I’ll speak to one of my medical colleagues. Thanks all for making me feel valid in my concern.

How is she now?

m0therofdragons · 17/03/2021 21:53

@Cinderellashoes clearly I was having a dramatic moment as she’s completely fine and back at school. No idea what it was, other dc haven’t caught it so all very odd. She’s not wanted to sleep in my bed since she was little and even then only a handful of times. She’s not a cuddly girl so it was strange seeing her behaving so differently. Normality has resumed. Fingers crossed we manage a full week at some point. Thanks for asking.
