Eye Prescription

Hi, can anyone give me some more info on my 4 Yr olds prescription?

4 Yr old has been falling over a fair bit when generally moving about is absolutely fine when climbing, concentrating I guess,
but a bit clumsy when just walking about. We decided to get his eyes checked and the prescription has come back as this:

Left
Sphere: +1.75
Cyl: - 4.50
Axis: 20

Right
Sphere: +1.25
Cyl: - 1.75
Axis: 170

So, what does that mean? I know I should have asked the optician but said 4 Yr old was being a pain in the arse and I wanted to pick glasses and get out of there!

Could this level of astigmatism be the cause of the clumsiness??

Thanks

I think the sphere bit means he's a bit long sighted a + is long and - shortsighted my eyes are -0.75 and I'm mildly shortsighted. I don't know what the test means though.

*rest not test!

Very much so!

So, the sph (or sphere) measurement is the generally level of long sightedness. This means that your dc will struggle to see things close up.

The cyl is the astigmatism. If we assume that the sph is the general level then the cyl is the extra bit or correction needed in just one direction. Nearly everyone has this is nature isn’t perfect and most people’s eyeballs are not round.

Your child’s astigmatism is high, especially in the left eye. Most people just have -0.50 or so.

It will mean that things are blurred in one direction. Imagine you are looking at a square. The sides of the square are sharp but the top and bottom are blurred.

It won’t have helped with their depth perception at all.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking about the sphere too. The cyl value is the confusing /worrying one for me. I don't really know what impact that will have on his vision.

Stanfordpines, thank you for that. That explanation about the astigmatism is exactly what I was looking for. Wish I taken him to the opticians sooner, I'm a rubbish mum and just thought he was clumsy!
