Hi, my son is 9 he has been on molvicol for a few years but every couple of months he gets clogged up and even sachets don’t help, a few times we’ve had to use at home sepository as a last resort. It’s got to the point he avoids drinking his drinks now as he doesn’t like the taste, he won’t touch prescribes senokot medicine either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you...
Does anyone know if there is such thing as a daily fibre vitamin for children?

Fybogel? It is slightly bitty but has a nice orange taste.

My daughter suffered with terrible constipation for years, eventually we were prescribed sodium picosulfate and it really helped, might be worth a try.

What’s this please? I’m going to have to speak to the doctor, he’d be better taking a tablet of some sort like a senokot

It is a liquid medicine, I don't know if it's available in tablet form. We were referred to gastroenterology in the end after years on senakot and were told that it's basically useless, so they prescribed this and it was brilliant. Movical does taste foul, the only way I could get my daughter to drink it was by mixing it in a small amount of water and then adding it to milk.

citykat · 04/03/2021 14:25

We mix plain Movicol with milk too, tried with water and squash but were advised by hospital to try milk and it is more palatable. We do 50:50 water and milk and only 60mls. I had been making big glasses of squash as thought that would be easier, it isn’t.

There's a chocolate flavour Movicol now. Ds didn't like it but found it drinkable, as opposed to the terrible lemonish one. Pharmacist had to order it in.

Cinderellashoes · 04/03/2021 15:05

You can get plain movicol that doesn’t taste of anything?

citykat · 04/03/2021 16:10

Yes, we’ve never been offered anything elseConfused it’s got purple writing and is called “Movicol Paediatric Plain”.

Cinderellashoes · 04/03/2021 18:37

And is it that he doesn’t like the taste of? I didn’t think you could taste it when mixed with squash. you can get chocolate flavour too.

ThingsCanGetBetter · 24/03/2021 20:14

I can’t taste it in his squash tbh but I think the thought of it puts him off now.

Have you looked at the ERIC website? They have a helpline which I found really helpful.

Crappyfridays7 · 25/03/2021 12:27

Our continence nurse suggested, as it’s salty trying salty crisps or similar prior to taking it.
My son takes it via a straw but agreed it’s nasty stuff. He has dulcolax too which is a liquid works much better and is 5/10ml followed by a drink of juice def more palatable. But good toilet habits are important too sitting after meals feet up. Drinking plenty and a good diet - easier said than done with my fussy boy at times though. If your son is still getting bunged up increase sachets, the idea is that the medicine helps move things along that’s why it’s Mixed with fluids a tablet may have an effect but movicol is the first line for constipation, do wish they’d make it taste better!!

Crappyfridays7 · 25/03/2021 12:30

Try Ribena or something strong vimto do a cordial I think it’s the saltiness they taste it makes the juice taste a bit funny my son is 9 top op, had years of this so totally understand how frustrating it is

ThingsCanGetBetter · 09/05/2021 14:54

Thanks all.
He has been prescribed lactolose medicine now which he takes and doesn’t taste bad but is now up to day 20 of not going. He’s had the odd leak but nothing solid. It’s so frustrating and I feel so helpless. Done a suppository this morning he kept it in for the amount of time but it was in the toilet when he tried to go, so I’m hoping it’s had some effect but 4 hours later still no major joy
