Swollen tonsil, WWYD?

DD (5) has a swollen tonsil on one side, it looks like a round lump that reaches across to her uvula in the centre. It's normal flesh colour, not red or angry looking. I noticed it a week ago as she had a mouth ulcer and she was complaining about that so I took a look. The lump doesn't seem to have changed since 7 days ago.

I showed a pic to GP last week who acknowledged the lump but wasn't worried, didn't want to see her, and said maybe that's just how the tonsil is for her. I feel like I would have noticed before if this was normal for her, as it was alarming when I spotted it. She has always snored on and off though.

The last couple of days she has developed a bumpy chest and neck rash. She sounds congested nasally (e.g. noisy but not laboured breathing, eating with mouth open) but no mucus to show for it.

She is completely fine in herself, happy and playing.

WWYD? (Is it normal to have one enlarged tonsil?)

I would push for a proper examination they can’t always tell by pictures, is it got any white bits on it ?

No white bits, no redness, it hasn't changed noticeably over the past 8 days but it's definitely there.

I think I would ring 111 for advice and try and get a second opinion.

DinosaurDiana · 20/02/2021 08:15

Yes, phone for advice as she has new symptoms.

BikeRunSki · 20/02/2021 08:15

With these new symptoms I would seek further advice from GP or 111.

@dreamerdreamer my son has a similar thing. He was complaining of a bit or a sore throat a few weeks back and one of his tonsils was really big in comparison to the other. I have been keeping an eye on it as his sore throat was minor and only lasted a day. His tonsil is still the same size and it has been concerning me as it's just the one that's big. I have a GP appointment on Monday for him to discuss (telephone) but I am hoping they will get him in to examine it. I am not sure if this is how that tonsil normally looks or whether it is new that it is swollen and this is what concerns me. If your not satisfied with your GPs response, I would push for an examination. Let me know how you get on Smile
