DMSA Scan results

Hi All
My dd is 5 and has an enlarged left kidney which was picked up when she was 5 months old. Over the years it’s improved and she’s not had any issues until when we went to a routine check up in December they have discovered her left kidney has some stones.

She’s due to have treatment under a general anaesthetic in a few weeks to remove them but the consultant wanted to do a DMSA scan to check the left kidney was still functioning ok before the op. She’s had one when she was 1 and all was ok.

The scan was over 2 weeks ago and I haven’t heard anything from the hospital. They rang me last week with some pre op questions and I mentioned I was still waiting for the results of the scan, the person on the phone said no news is good news and they would have called if they had seen anything. I called the secretary on Friday saying I hadn’t heard anything, she called me back and has asked me to go in on Wednesday to see the consultant to get the results. I’m starting to worry now that something is wrong, am I stressing over nothing? Thanks x

I suspect it's nothing, probably the consultant has a cancellation there.
If there was a major problem they'd have called back sooner.
It's possible that the receptionist mentioned to the consultant that you seemed a little worried, and the consultant said "you know, I've got a short gap on Wednesday, let's get her in then".

I had similar with ds after a brain scan. Got follow up letter just after the scan asking me to bring him in in about 2 months time. Next day, got a letter "due to unforeseen circumstances can you come in in 2 days time".
That was a little panicky.

He happened to have an ENT appointment that afternoon and I mentioned it to his consultant. While we were having the hearing test done, she phoned (without letting me know) his MRI consultant and was able to tell me that there was no worries, simply the MRI consultant had now got annual leave over the original date and had a cancellation.
Ds tells his sisters very smugly that he has confirmation of a "perfect brain".

Hoping everything is ok, it just gets you worried doesn’t it and your mind starts working overtime thinking of all the possibilities. I suppose as I called up chasing the results they have booked me appointment, no clue how long I would have been waiting if I hadn’t of phoned.

I’m glad all was ok with your ds mri.

It is worrying. The ENT consultant said that she would have worried if she was me, even though she knew (with her inside knowledge) that the chances were that it was something like annual leave.

I was so glad she phoned the other consultant and asked, even though I'm not totally sure that was in line with protocol.

Good luck for Wednesday.
She didn't tell me she was doing it, obviously, because if it had been bad news then she couldn't tell me. However, she might have been able to ask if I could go straight up "as I was there" I suppose.

I also meant to add that I've known a couple of people who have had bad news from a scan, one had the ambulance waiting by the time they arrived home and another had the phone call the following morning to tell them to come in straight away and prepare to stay, so waiting 2 weeks before phoning definitely sounds along the lines of "no news is good news".

As the consultant said to me "you're allowed to worry about your dc" which was sweet of her.
I think what I find worse is trying to pretend to everyone that I'm sure it will all be fine, while constructing worse and worse scenarios in my head.

Hope all is okay.

Hi, just thought I’d update following news from the hospital. All was ok with the DMSA scan, the left kidney with the stones is working fine and there’s no issues. Pretty pleased as I was a nervous wreck all morning waiting for the appointment.
We have the treatment in a couple of weeks to remove the stones and then probably more investigations into why the stones formed in the first place x
