Help- constipation in 6 month old!

Hi everyone,

My LG was breast fed for the first 4 months as we had no issues with her pooing. When we introduced formula her poos became a lot harder and a lot less regular but she was not really struggling to pass them. We introduced solids 3 weeks ago and ever since then she’s been having clay like poos and literally screaming passing them, it’s awful Sad I’ve spoken to the doctor who said he doesn’t want to prescribe anything as she needs to get used to digesting food. He did advise a little bit of orange juice which we gave and she then did a really big soft poo so I thought things might be getting better. But she then didn’t have another for 2 days and it was really hard again and there was even blood as it was so hard Sad

Does anyone have any advice on what we should do? I don’t know whether I can keep giving orange juice? Hmm I’ve tried all the other things continuously- prunes pears etc and boiled water.

I suffer a lot with health anxiety which I have now transferred on to worrying about my daughter so I really worry with things like this about what it could mean. Is it normal in anyone else’s experience? Sorry I probably sound daft Blush

Thanks x

Your poor baby! How horrible for you too.
I don’t know if you are buying ‘baby cereals’ type foods and forgive me if you aren’t, but a lot of them are rice based and rice is terribly constipating. Bake or steam a sweet potato and mash it up for her with whatever else you are having for dinner and she might get on better with that. Sweet potatoes are fantastic for relieving constipation. Read up on soluble fibre as it might give you ideas on which foods are worth mashing up.
Hope she improves soon!

@PerseverancePays I’ve only been giving her veggies and fruits that I’ve blended up myself! So nothing that should really constipate her Sad just hoping it’s something that will eventually pass!

That is so strange, sounds like you are giving her exactly the right things, poor baby. It might be worth having a zoom consultation with a nutritionist that specialises in infants. Regular ones always say to give up wheat, dairy and sugar, which of course doesn’t apply to your little one; she’s got to have her milk and she’s not getting the other two. Keep googling, you’re bound to find forums with better info than this one. Doctors get virtually no trading in nutrition so know very little on the subject. Good luck!
