I put another thread on here regarding my son and is persistent diarrhoea and we think he may be celiac (runs in family)

Ahywsy, it's been like this I think since he broke up from school - episodes of diarrhoea a good 5 times a day.

Then it occurred to me that I have been enduring he takes a gummy multi vitamin a day and that is the only thing that has changed in his diet.

Ami Clutching at straws and couid it be this?

It could be, especially if sugar free with sweeteners in. Unusual if only one a day though. Stop them and see what happens!

NothingIsGoing2GetBetterItsNot · 30/01/2021 08:33

Have just googled a couple of brands and non of them have the sweeteners which act as a laxative in (thankfully!)... as pp said only way to check is stop giving them for a while?

My friends’ child can’t have vitamin d because of this!

Dancingalong · 30/01/2021 08:47

I had a similar experience with my son, he was having tummy aches and a lot of extra trips to the toilet. It took a while to realise it seemed to have started with the vitamins, stopped them and it all stopped. We tried again recently but the same happened again.

TheSockMonster · 30/01/2021 08:48

Is it this one?

If so, it says Contains Maltitol which is a polyol - excessive consumption may cause a laxative effect

If they are the nice-tasting gummy ones can you be sure he’s not sneaking an extra one? Lots of vitamins will has gastric side effects if taken in high doses. It’s the body’s way of flushing out the excess.

dementedpixie · 30/01/2021 08:49

If it contains Maltitol then that is a polyol and can have a laxative effect.

Remmy123 · 30/01/2021 08:52

@TheSockMonster yes it's those ones!!

He said he has been having one a day BEFORE breakfast.

Wouid it cause that many bouts of diarrhoea tho?!

Depends how sensitive he is to it. The same with the vitamins. A reasonable dose for one person may be a very high one for someone else.

Thanks - I hope it's this and not celiac / Chrones etc

Totally well in himself / never sick just diarrhoea
