Clicking hip in infant?

badg3r · 17/01/2021 22:44

Just noticed when changing that my four month old baby's hip clicks sometimes when I push her legs up and then out. As far as I'm aware this is sign for hip dysplsia so will call the health visitor tomorrow for advice anyway, but thought I'd ask the MN hive mind in the meantime if anyone else had this happen with their baby and it be something else/nothing to worry about?

Argh. Of course the title should say clicking 😂

I wouldn’t bother with hv, baby needs a gp appointment with a referral for a hip scan. Often nothing to worry about, but a scan will rule out hip dysplasia

We've edited the title for you now, OP.

HVs are trained to recognise hip dysplasia and they can do a referral.

I am not in the uk so HV will be the usual course for a referral here for an ultrasound. I guess I was more interested to know if others have had this before and it has turned out not to be dysplasia? I haven't noticed it before today. This is my third baby and I have friends who have had their babies in harnesses to treat dysplasia but in this cases is was picked up very early and didn't come on later in infancy.

Baby may need an Xray rather than a scan by the time the referral is made.

My DS had this at a similar age. I was initially really panicked but he was checked and it wasn't hip displasia. Good luck x

Many clicky noises are ligaments moving and nothing to worry about, but it is important to get this checked out promptly. HVs and GPs are experienced at examining for hip problems and will refer for imaging (usually ultrasound) if needed.

@Chattercino did they say what it was? I have an appointment for this week to get it checked, I am wondering if it is similar to your experience since it has only started now. Did you need a scan to rule out dysplasia?

@Iesugrist that's reassuring, I obviously can't tell what the clicking is from, but the internet just says it is hip sockets and nothing about ligaments etc!
