Hi,

Does this look like a cold sore? My 5 year old has this on the bottom of her lip, I'm just a bit worried as I have a 6 week old who she has been kissing and cuddling and I know they can be quite dangerous for babies.
Thanks x

Yes it does... did it just appear like that though? No blistering? Have you been near anyone with a cold sore??

snowliving · 14/01/2021 15:05

I don't think it does.
It looks more like a scabbed spot to me.
Did it go through a swollen and lumpy stage?
Has it been itchy?

Has the dc had them before?

Cold sores can look like that at the start, or the end.
If it stays looking like that though, I'd doubt it was a cold sore.

It came up yesterday just like that and hasn't changed since yesterday afternoon when I noticed it, daughter said it was a bit stingy. She's never had one before and because of lockdown we haven't seen anyone for over a week my husband had one a couple of week ago but that's cleared up now. I wouldn't worry usually but she has been kissing her little brother a lot and I've heard awful stories of babies getting them ☹️

Has she ever had one before?
Kids are usually a bit Ill when they have one for the first time. A temperature, feeling a bit lethargic.
When my son was 2, he started getting them. The first time he had about 4 at once, then it went to the usual one at a time.

CarrotPuff · 14/01/2021 18:51

My cold sores don't look like that at the start. Is it itchy?

Thisismyusernamefornow · 14/01/2021 18:52

It doesn't look like one to me.

Normally blister and weep.

Panpig · 14/01/2021 18:54

My ds gets cold sores often and they've never looked like that

DuchenneParent · 14/01/2021 18:59

It could be the start of one, especially if they could have picked at it, but you will soon know as it will get bigger and blister.

Keep a close eye to see if it seems to be getting worse but try not to panic, it could just be a spot or she could have broke the skin in some way you don't know about.

Minnie6078 · 14/01/2021 20:10

Thanks everyone! Il keep an eye on it but it doesn't seem to be changing so hopefully it's fine :-) I read about a baby catching it and being very poorly I panicked

Buy some lysine - it’s just a protein but it can stop cold sores in their tracks.
