Lingering cough after a cold.

DS 10 had cold symptoms last weekend. It’s typical for him to get a cough at the tail end of a cold. But to be on the safe side we did a covid test which was negative so we know it’s not covid.

Last time this happened his cough lingered for about 3 weeks. Mainly in the morning and during the night. But fine during the day.

He’s been coughing through the night again. Not repeatedly. Just 2 coughing spells. What can actually help?

I’ve seemed to try it all over the years. When he was younger he would have a cough all winter and
nothing seemed to help.

Any miracle cures?!

An inhaler!

Cough with every cold
Lingering cough after a cold
Night time/waking cough

All typical of asthma.

It might not be, but definitely worth speaking to a GP

Yes. Asthma

My dd has a post nasal drip, she needs to take an antihistamine before bed, otherwise she coughs, especially after she’s had a cold.
Ds and I have asthma, coughs are worse in the night when laying down, and after a cold.
So it could be either...

Thanks all. Thankfully it isn’t quite as bad as when was younger. He did have inhalers and sometimes steiroids on occasion when he was a toddler!

He is absolutely fine in between these colds and lingering coughs though?

Elevate his head- either books under the bed legs or pillows under the mattress. If his head is higher up he'll cough less at night

One of mine is the same, will be completely
Fine and then a could will come along and back comes the cough. Dry air is worse so if you have a humidifier try that, or pop a wet towel on the radiator at night.

I'd definitely ask the doctor though. Xx

I get this. I do my very best to ward off colds. Last year I had a cough for months on end. It was dreadful.

No idea what it is. Sometimes GP says it is an infection and other times a virus that is lingering. I thought it might be asthma or an allergy and was told no.

He has my sympathies!
