White pupil - Retinablastoma?

Vebrithien · 29/11/2020 10:10

Hopefully someone can help me here.

Took a photo of DS 6 months last night with a flash, and one of his pupils showed up white (the other was red).

I know this can be a tell tale sign of retinablastoma (a friend lost an eye to it as a child). Does anyone have any experience of this?

Today, I took more flash photos, from different angles, and sometimes the opposite pupil shows white, and sometimes both do, and sometimes they are both red.

DS was 6 weeks premature, didn't have any retinopathy of prematurity.

Could it be because he is still small (DD4 just showed two red pupils)?

I'll be phoning the doctor first thing tomorrow, but am panicking now.

Get him checked out, but if my memory is correct, if it was then it would be that one white all the time in photos.

Thank you. Of course, if it was bilateral, then it could be seen in both eyes?

I have photos where one pupil is red, with the other white, and then photos the opposite way round, and one where both are white.

First thing tomorrow, I'm on the phone to the doctor

Echoing what @Witchend has said but also remember to not do too many flashes in bubs eyes.

Don't worry, I'm not taking loads, we've been for several night time walks with DD and DS over the last couple of weeks, and I'm checking back through them. Had a really clear photo last night, so took another this morning.

Hopefully he'll get checked out soon

There are quite a few things that can cause leukocoria (white pupil reflex), some of which are more common in premature babies. Well done for spotting it OP.
Your GP needs to refer you urgently to determine the cause.

We had the same experience with my little girl when she was about 2 months old (she’s nearly 5 months now) where I noticed one of her eyes had reflected white and I also had the same concerns regarding retinoblastoma. When I called the doctor they said it can be very common in babies because their eyes aren’t always fully aligned yet and therefore you sometimes get the white reflection when the flash bounces off the optic nerve.

The doctor will do a red reflex test (I think you can do it yourself at home to some extent If you google how to do it). We were referred to an eye specialist when our doctor did this test- not just because of that but also because she had one pupil bigger than the other. I was so anxious but there turned out to be absolutely nothing wrong with her eyes and the specialist eye doctor said the white reflect can also sometimes be seen because of smart phones but obviously always best to get checked Smile

Thank you so much!

I found a single picture of DD, from 4 years ago, when she was the same age that DS is now, and it had the same issue. She just has red eye now (very fair).

Will still get it checked out, but fingers crossed it's just DS being small, and still with slightly squiffy eyes Grin

DS is all clear!

Saw the doctor, who looked at the photos a did the red reflex test, and his eyes are all fine! Nothing nasty there at all.

He has a small squint, common in premie babies, which is getting better, but we've got to go back in 8 weeks time, when DS is 6 months adjusted age, to be checked again. If it hasn't fully resolved, then we'll be referred up to the hospital.

It is this squint that has caused the different colours of his pupils with the flash. On seeing the photos, th doctor did say that I had absolutely done the right thing, getting him seen.

And breathe!!
