Toddler with tonsillitis sleeping a lot

Hi all, DD is 20 months and was diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday (took her to walk in centre as she was utterly miserable, inconsolably crying, not eating, and had a temperature). She was prescribed antibiotics and regular pain relief.

Thankfully she seems a little cheerier today but has been sleeping a LOT. Normally she doesn't nap in the day at all, but today she has slept most of the day. She woke up at 4am, I gave her some Nurofen at 5am, she fell asleep at 5:30am and slept until 8. Was awake for an hour and then fell asleep again at 9 and is still asleep now!

I'm a first time mum and amazingly this is the first time she's ever really been ill. When she is awake she seems okay, a little grouchy and off her food but that's to be expected. I took her temperature earlier and it was normal.

Thank you Smile

I would just let her sleep. It's good for recovery and her body is probably tired from fighting it off. Provided she is drinking and waking up ok

Just realised I forgot to ask a question Grin My question was wether this is normal in a poorly toddler and wether I should just let her sleep as long as she wants?

Thanks @QueenPaws

Yes, it’s quite normal to sleep a lot having tonsillitis, but keep checking her, as I’m sure you are doing. It’s the bodies way of recovery.

Poor thing, I remember the worries when the little ones are ill too.

Keep a keen eye on her, trust your instincts and keep checking on her whilst she's asleep. Fingers crossed she gets well soon

My DS is 9 years old and has just had tonsillitis on top of Covid and he slept. And slept. And slept. At his worst, he slept 12hrs overnight, woke for a drink, slept apart from when we woke him for meds and fluids, slept more. At one point, I woke him and put him in the bath and he fell asleep in the bath. His body was just exhausted. He needed to repair.

As long as they're rousable, drinking, alert when awake and hydrated, sometimes they just need to sleep it off.
