Ds can’t use foot after fall

2 year old ds slipped off a very low climbing frame earlier. I didn’t see it happen but he was crying a lot after. Since then he has been unable to put weight on his foot properly and is limping around on his heel, clearly in pain. He is out of sorts and crying a lot, calpol doesn’t seem to have helped either. There is no swelling or bruising at all and it doesn’t seem to bother him when i rotate his foot or anything. So now I’m not sure what to do. If there was swelling I think we’d be straight to A&E but as no swelling that seems like it might be OTT. Has anyone had similar? Is it best to wait till tomorrow to see if it’s improved? I’m just worried about further injury if it is fractured, but equally don’t want to rush to A&E for a sprain as I do tend to overreact with these things. Thanks!

A sprain can often be worse than a fracture. If he’s no weight bearing I would get it checked out. What about mirror injuries clinic?

FourDecades · 29/07/2020 16:18

I would take him to be checked out. A child that young is generally "true" to their emotions and hasn't learnt to be a hypochondriac for sympathy

Thank you for your responses. There doesn’t seem to be an urgent care near us (the website just directs us to the hospital) but I’ve just called our GP and they are going to call back today, so I will see what they say.

By ‘urgent care’ I mean minor injuries!

When I broke my foot it didn't really swell at all. Just a tiny bit over the (small) broken bone. I limped around on it for three days until my mum made me go to a&e!

Dr said it was quite common for small breaks to swell less than soft tissue injuries.

Have had foot fractures with no obvious swelling

Thanks all. Had a phone appointment with the GP earlier who said he should have an X-ray if he can’t bear weight, but no harm in waiting till tomorrow. So we are going to wait and see in the morning, fingers crossed it’s better tomorrow!

The OP is from July 2020 so I think we can infer that the injury has healed whether or not anything was broken!
