Do children get tinnitus?

My 9 yr old DS has complained of occasional ringing in one ear. Today he said he got a weird noise. He says it only lasts a few seconds. It doesn't bother him.

But I have tinnitus and it freaked me out that he might experience this.

Is it usual in kids? I can't see any blocked wax, but is it possible it's that?

Yes, DS has had it for several years, he is 11 now. He had hearing tests then was referred to a hearing therapist who was brilliant. He has a tinnitus masker (in ear device) to help him during quiet times when background music isn't an option.

I also have tinnitus.

Yep..I've had it since I was about 7. Don't know why. Mum never believed me so nothing got done about it till I was an adult and it got worse.

Do you know why your DS has it @SpeedofaSloth?

Yes they can. Please take him to a otorhinolaryngologist.

Not really, no. He had glue ear as a preschooler and had a perforated eardrum, but that resolved without surgery.
My own also began in childhood and is unexplained.
His (and my own) treatment focused on relaxation and coping strategies.

Take him to the doctor to rule anything serious out.

Try and go asap
