Daughters Vulva

Hi all,

Hoping you can advise....

My almost 11 year old was hysterical this morning when she got out of the shower.

She was getting dried infront of the mirror and noticed that her vulva area looked different. (Her exact words were here vagina was falling out) it really scares me, I couldn’t calm her down for a long time.

When she eventually settled and showed me, I could see that it looks like the inner lips of her vulva have came out and they are hanging outside.

Now I know that they come in all shapes and sizes but this was shocking for my daughter as up until yesterday her front area down below was very neat and exactly like her younger sisters.

Also, I was slightly shocked as mine doesn’t look like that.

Could someone please assure me that this is normal and part of puberty?

Also, could anyone recommend any books that explain puberty to pre teens?

Many thanks

It sounds "normal" if that's the term to youse. If your really worried se your GP. It's likley she will now keep looking or touching try ensure she doesn't it may cause irritation?

Questions that's will help you might be;
Does she have any itching, discharge, pain in the area? Is this the first sign of puberty?

Also helpfully is the NHS Puberty page www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/vagina-shapes-and-sizes/

Or this with non invasive diagram www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/body/health/g11658368/is-my-vagina-normal-shape-size-vulva-labia/

I hope this helps 🙂 x

@Glitteryone good for you if yours isn’t like that! Lots of peoples are, it’s not as neat looking and can give you serious body image issues so you need to help your daughter understand it’s totally normal now while she’s young.

Mines like a ham baguette with extra ham. Sounds normal to me

you could easily Google thousands if not millions of pictures of non sexual labia pictures to show her how different they can look. Fwiw my labia are fine but my vagina is certainly different after 4 babies, I'd have no problem showing my daughters mine and speaking about it.

nevergoingoutagain · 17/07/2020 20:44

Completely normal!

QueenMabby · 17/07/2020 20:45

My 11 year old was exactly the same when it happened to her. I told her that it was perfectly normal and that all parts of her were growing and changing at their own pace and that her outer lips may grow later to cover them (normal) or they may not (also normal).
One thing she did notice was that the skin was a little sensitive for a few days and she found looser knickers more comfortable.

There was a photo essay in the guardian a while back called 100 vaginas or something like that. Maybe have a look at it yourself to check you think it's suitable, but it shows the variation between women, could be reassuring?

Oblomov20 · 17/07/2020 21:01

Mine are completely different shapes. So embarrassing.

Itsarattrap · 17/07/2020 21:03

Ask your doctor if she’s distressed. This really isn’t the place.

Oblomov20 · 17/07/2020 21:10

So sad to read.

It's totally normal for the inner labia to hang lower than the outer labia, in just the same way people have a variety of sizes and shapes of ears or noses. The Great Wall of Vagina is a display of plaster casts of hundreds of women's vulvas and they are all very different and all very normal. Perhaps have a look with your dd to reassure her.

Glitteryone · 17/07/2020 22:42

Some really helpful and reassuring replies here, thank you so much!

Also some very rude and snidey comments - no need at all!!!! Please be negative and rude elsewhere.

I remember, one day, as a young teen reaching down and noticing my inner labia were poking outside the outer labia all of a sudden. It was very weird and quite frankly it's a pain in the arse, but of course it's normal.

mummymayhem18 · 17/07/2020 23:09

@apriCot 🤣🤣🤣that's very well put and quite accurate I'd say 🤣👍

lostfrequencies · 17/07/2020 23:15

Reported.

indemMUND · 17/07/2020 23:22

@TheCanyon no parent should show their child theirs an as example. That's not good advice. Discuss if there's a problem, yes, but wtf?!

TimeWastingButFun · 17/07/2020 23:27

I don't think posts like this should be on here because 1. No one knows if they're genuine (sorry if it is, and I'm sure you can find your answers online more easily than on here) and 2. If it is genuine, do you want potential pervs reading this?
