Please calm me down. What is this on DS neck?

Hi, hoping you lovely lot can keep me calm until I can ring the doctor tomorrow.
There is a lump on DS (1yo) neck that is concerning me. For a few days I just brushed it off with ‘oh its just his adams apple its fine’ to DH. Until i duly found out that boys dont develop these until just before puberty!
Anyway the ‘lump’ hasnt changed in size but it is red and when touched it feels not solid, but not squishy, like a spot you would get under the skin or a boil.
Of course, the word lump has sent me spinning and i can’t concentrate on anything really. I’ve attached photos but I just can’t think what it could be, my daughter never had anything like this.

It looks like it could be a spot or bite that’s got a bit infected to me. If you can’t get him seen by a GP tomorrow you could try a pharmacist to put your mind at rest until you can see a GP.

Insect bite?

Toilenstripes · 15/07/2020 20:42

A bite or a boil? Is it warm to the touch? Itchy?

ListenLinda · 15/07/2020 20:42

It doesn’t cause him any discomfort either, it’s just there. And I feel like a right twat for being flippant about it

It doesn’t feel warm and he doesn’t itch, he probably doesn’t even know it’s there.

I had exactly that, in the exact same spot. Don’t really know to this day what it was, but antibiotics cleared it up.

PippinMeriadoc · 15/07/2020 20:55

Looks like an abscess to me. My children get them all the time. Won’t cause him pain until it’s exerting pressure on the surrounding area and due to its position that won’t happen until it’s HUGE. A course of flucloxicillin should sort it out.

Thanks all, you’re a lovely lot. Good to know it can be and most likely is benign. My GP is pretty good at seeing children same day if necessary so hopefully will be on the right track tomorrow.

@listenlinda did the gp put your mind at rest?

ListenLinda · 17/07/2020 16:35

@minmooch we have a course of ABs and to go back if it doesn’t clear up after :)
