Baby head circumference jumping percentiles

Hey

I'm beside myself with worry.

To put it bluntly - my 12 month old has a big head.

3 months ago (at the start of lockdown) I had a doctors appointment as I was concerned at how big it was. She said it was fine because he was developing well and looked (over zoom) well. It had jumped from the 75th to the 99.9th percentile. She didn’t seem concerned.

Well now, (after a photo this weekend) still concerned I had a health visitor measure and it’s gone above this percentile off the chart. It’s 50.5cm at 12 months.

Has anyone had experience of this? I’ve got a face to face appointment tomorrow and I fee sick. He is doing everything he should developmentally and babbles. His forehead does stick out too :(

Just wanted to hear if anyone else’s little one has experienced this?

Thank you

I think. Its gone through quick as he's still tiny, doctors tend to try to push through any baby concerns just incase.

It's a good thing try not to worry Smile

@moomen thank you - yes you are right x

Bring your red book and a notebook to take down information (and snacks)

My friend's daughter was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at 12 months - this is a problem with the drainage of fluid from the brain and a big head is usually what is first noticed. (most babies with big heads don't have hydrocephalus, but it needs ruling out). Because it was spotted and handled she is now 16 and perfectly well. Hydrocephalus is one of those conditions that they can manage when it's spotted, but if it's left can cause problems with learning. So well done for being proactive here x

Hey guys,

Just came back from my baby's consultation -
Consultant said he wasn't too worried - my baby is hitting his milestones etc and babbling loads. However he did refer him for an ultrasound as he has slight bossing of his forehead so now just waiting for that to come through x

@dizzywoman ooo that's good news! That they weren't overly worried.

Does it bulg lots or is it like a slight ridge? Mine rubs all his front hair of so you can see the plates and can look bossed in some pics?

Do you feel less worried now xxx

dizzywoman · 14/07/2020 14:41

@MoominKitty thank you 😊

He said 'slight' bossing and to me doesn't look bad. My baby has a very high hairline which don't help (was born like that!)

Erm. I am and am not. I'm naturally an intense worrier unfortunately so I just want the ultrasound done ASAP. Thank you for replying - it means a lot xxx

Mine does too, looks very odd in some angles! But I've come to accept its his head 😂.

I was gonna pop on today to check on you when I got the alert you'd posted haha.

It's really hard having a small baby atm what with no health visitors so it's nice to reach out and such.

Have they given a time scale for the appointment at all? Hopefully it's just as quick! Xxx

dizzywoman · 14/07/2020 15:40

@MoominKitty thank you that's so sweet :)

Got the call this afternoon! Got an appointment early next week - so that's good :)

Yes regarding having a baby in this time - no health visitors/baby groups is not great :( xxx

MoominKitty · 20/07/2020 17:21

Hey how you doing? Did you get your appointment date through as yet? Hope you had a nice relaxing weekend xx

dizzywoman · 21/07/2020 22:40

Hey 👋

Thank you for checking in :)

We had the ultrasound. The man doing it said he couldn't see any blockages but not much else was said. He told me the doctor would call within the week so just waiting to hear back from him.

It's a strange one really - my babies head is big - looks bigger in pictures but he is developmentally great thank goodness so one min your super worried the next your like no he is fine!!!

Hope your okay too x

Well No news is good new so they say! And it's good Nothing jumped out at them.

His brain is just very developed maybe? Does he hit his milestones earlyish? Bet he's just a smart little dude.

I bet he's still super cute!

My boy has my small head 😂 all His hats drown him, but baby grows go on quick haha, massive feet though Hmm

@dizzywoman
Hi OP, just wondering if you’d had any more news about your DS?

I hope the doctor has got back to you about the scan?

dizzywoman · 31/07/2020 12:49

Hey @brightbluegentian

Thanks for asking :)

Nope the doctor hasn't got back to me at all? I'm currently away so haven't chased up but will call this afternoon. I suppose no news is good news? Xx

Hi, did you ever hear back from doctor? My babies head has just been measured and it’s jumped multiple percentiles so very worried.

dizzywoman · 02/10/2020 07:52

@naturemum1

Yes I did. The consultant said it was familial - meaning basically he got it from his dad. (Who has the same thing) h

It's now looking a lot better now he is a little older it's more in proportion but all I can say is get it looked at as I know how worrying it can be. Good luck x
