Ranitidine question...

My son was prescribed ranitidine yesterday for reflux and collected the oral suspension 5mg/5ml from pharmacy today. Didn’t think anything of it, expected GP/pharmacist would only dispense if safe. However, after googling something today, I see it’s been recalled everywhere and NHS say anything with ranitidine in isn’t available - at all. Pharmacy now shut here and can’t get hold of any advice until tomorrow, does anybody know if some versions of it are safe etc or should it not have been dispensed at all? Is all ranitidine recalled? Thank you

Why don’t you call your GP on Monday and ask for omeprazole instead?

Yep I think I will be!

The risk is minute. It's a theoretical risk. You wouldn't believe how long I have been trying to get ranitidine for my daughter for.

Google the specific manufacturer of the ranitidine to find out if it has been recalled. Many were recalled because other ingredients in the formulation may not be safe, the ranitidine itself is fine. It is probably the case that the liquid you have got has been made using other (safe) ingredients.

Thanks all. I’ve spoken to a pharmacist and this formulation is safe. Seems I’m lucky to have even got hold of it as a lot is like gold dust at the moment!
