Dentists trying to save money

I have to get this off my chest. I am a Dental nurse and Dentists have been closed now since March. This was the right thing to do but we are starting to open up again in two weeks. I have a two year old so will miss him but am looking forward to returning to a job I love. My boss is brilliant and has bought improved masks, gowns and (more importantly) air purifiers for the surgeries which remove bacteria and viruses and protect me, him and our patients.

HOWEVER, there are a lot of dentists who are refusing to but these air purifiers. They are simple, relatively cheap (do you know any poor dentists?) and will reduce the risks to our children when they come for check ups. There is lots of evidence on their effectiveness.

I’m just disgusted that they are choosing profits over people. This hasn’t been picked up by the media and I just can’t work out why. This is the health of our kids and parents!!!

Just needed to vent. Sorry.

I thought the virus was transmitted through droplets which fall quite quickly to surfaces, so an air purifier is unlikely to significant protection. More likely to give a false sense of security. PPE, hygiene procedures and regular washing of hands and surfaces are much more important. An air purifier would not be a concern for me.

Is there a link to scientific evidence they will provide protection.

Thank you for going back to work, I am glad you have a good boss. I

Air purifiers don’t clear air if viruses, do they?

simonthedog · 25/05/2020 21:59

I don't believe there is any evidence that they work

I have no idea of how or if they work but I live in Italy and I know even some hairdressers and beauty salons have bought them here. If they make even a slight difference to air quality, it makes sense right now!
