Fever in 7 month old

My 7 month old has had a temperature for 2 days. I am getting a different reading with an underarm and ear thermometer and wondering if I should be concerned or not. The ear thermometer is reading as high as 39.4 but underarm 37.4.

He is feeding ok, upped his milk a bit and decreased his solids. He is a bit more clingy than usual and slighly less engaged and smiley and is sleeping more. His head feels very hot but the rest of his body normal.

None of us have been out of the house for weeks other than rural walks so I don't know where he would have picked up a bug. Any ideas what might be wrong and should I contact our gp?

The ear one is more reliable so you should definitely contact your GP. That's a high reading for a baby.

Trust the ear reading and contact your GP.

I’d also trust the ear reading. Spikes in temps in young kids are common but call your GP for advice anyway

Does any one have any idea of what it might be? I spoke to the receptionist at the gp and she said that she can't guarantee a call before tuesday so I am wondering if I should take him to a&e. I would rather avoid that at the moment though.

If it is sepsis or meningitis would there be other signs? The only thing I can think of is that he may have picked up a bug from sitting in our paddling pool a couple of days ago.
