My 4 year old has been a bit off for a week or so, prone to chest infections but nothing like that at the moment.

Tired, leg ache, tummy ache, thought possible a urine infection brewing - but over the last 24hrs she has bruises on her shin, possible some from legitimate bike rides, but more seem to be appearing, I wondered if they look like normal bruises or would they cause you concern?

I know you can't fully tell, picture is not super clear either - but opinions welcome.

How is she OP? Is everything okay?

hatscatsmats · 21/05/2020 23:13

Thanks for checking in, the consultant phoned & is waiting for a film test result, she talked about the nasty end they are checking for, as well as something called ITP as well as low level things.

I think we will hear tomorrow & she gave us a follow up appointment. Strange to go out, the hospital was empty, one in & one out into children's outpatients.

I think it will be fine, the consultant agreed the bruises were significant, in person they do look dramatic & with full picture I can see why they are checking her with bloods.

She is acting like she is a bit under the weather, but not super unwell so will keep a close eye & if don't hear back, she said to bring her back. So will follow up.

ActuallyItsEugene · 22/05/2020 19:33

Any update OP? Hope she's okay.

They frighten the life out of you, don't they?

IslandbreezeNZ · 22/05/2020 20:41

I had chronic childhood ITP that really will always be on my record for life. They may send her for a blood test. Please free to ask me about it but also please don't jump to the conclusions that it is ITP - my son also had bruising like your daughter and because of my background I got it checked and he was ok x

My daughter had similar at the same age. She had bloods done which showed she was susceptible to bruising. However as the test is so sensitive they repeat it 3 times before making a formal diagnosis. The first as I said was positive, the following two negative. The paediatrician concluded it was most likely a post viral change in the blood composition which had lead to an increase in her susceptibility to bruise. I had know idea a viral illness could cause such a reaction (she had no other symptoms, just cold in the weeks prior, but I wouldn't have said she was ill with it). I worried myself sick about the causes, but was relieved at the outcome and sure enough they disappeared and 3 years on, we've not seen anything similar again.

Sorry not to update earlier, first time back on here today, no real update - as final results not back. Consultant rang & said preliminary results have made her less concerned then she was on paper, so lots of positives there, but I won't fully breathe out until all results in.

I think the last poster about post viral makes sense, as she is super pale & off but not acting ill.

Will update Monday as if I don't hear will chase, she said to take her back in next week as well so will do.

Thanks all - Thanks

Oh good that sounds more reassuring x

blueskys72 · 22/05/2020 21:34

Are they lumpy bruises? And are they bothering her?

LovingLola · 22/05/2020 21:38

That’s good news.
Hope you get brilliant news soon!

IslandbreezeNZ · 22/05/2020 21:45

I am certainly not a medical expert but viruses can play around with things like platelets very briefly post virus

Playdoughcaterpillar · 29/05/2020 09:40

Hi OP hope all the results came back ok?

Kebaivaiaaw · 09/09/2020 21:47

Hope all is well? Did you get to the bottom of this. Having a similar situation with my almost 4 year old, also had a similar thing happen last year after a nasty infection!x
