Possible broken toe/foot

On Tuesday DS (11) banged his foot on a chair. He was limping yesterday and still is today. His three smallest toes seem to be involved in the injury.
Does he need to be seen in minor injuries or can it be treated at home?

Tbh all they do for fingers and toes is tape it to the one next to it for a week or two. I have a very clumsy child who has had this done on more than one occasion! Oh & paracetamol for the pain if needed.

Imboredinthehouse · 16/04/2020 15:32

If it’s the whole foot then you may need to go. Ring them maybe to check if they are actually open and taking walk ins though

noblegiraffe · 16/04/2020 15:33

If you do the NHS 111 online checker it says that foot injuries in children need to be checked out.

Cuddling57 · 16/04/2020 15:36

One foot and toes look diff to the other. Do they normally look like that?
We have thought my son had broken toe and knuckle before (after not healing for ages) but they weren't.
The only way you will know is if you get them x-rayed.
Have you tried calling 111? Maybe they could book you in for a timer x-ray (someone else on mumsnet did this).
Although no one wants to go to A and E at the moment if you need to then you need to!

The whole forefoot looks swollen, as well as the toes being wonky. I suspect probably should be checked out.

Ftumch · 16/04/2020 18:14

111 says take children in for foot injuries, I've just been on the website and done the questionnaire as I suspect I've broken my toe!

Glittercandle · 16/04/2020 19:27

Thanks for all the advice.

I think we’ll have to brave minor injuries as the top of his foot really is quite swollen. I’m going to go in first and find out what the protocol is as DS is extremely vulnerable. Not a great time for this to happen!

ftumch hope you aren’t suffering too much

They look broken - I have two broken toes. Nothing to be done, I never went into hospital with them, they don't mend them.

ScissorsBike · 16/04/2020 19:33

If he's vulnerable, definitely do not go into a&e! It's just some broken toes, they can do literally nothing for him. What do you hope to schieve?

I’m worried it’s his foot that’s broken rather than the toes.

He did break a toe last year and it was just buddy strapped, his whole foot didn’t look as bad.
So unsure what to do!

Call 111 or get it checked for an xrays. Its swollen and it could be fractured toes or foot.

woodencoffeetable · 16/04/2020 19:48

that needs an x-ray.
call 111 to see where best to go

nocoolnamesleft · 16/04/2020 20:33

It's not his toes I'm worried about, it's the amount of swelling in the foot. I'd be pretty surprised if that didn't at least need an xray.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 16/04/2020 20:36

Take him to a and e.
Seriously , they won't mind!
I broke my hand the other week and felt terrible going but it was empty and the staff were so lovely. They were saying " you've had an accident you're allowed to be here!"
I was xrayed straight away and strapped up an sent home with fracture clinic info within an hour.

Ftumch · 16/04/2020 20:47

@Glittercandle thanks Smile

Glittercandle · 16/04/2020 20:51

We’re waiting outside minor injuries (small hospital with no A&E). I went in alone to explain the situation, will wait in the car until the phone to say it’s DSs turn.

A&e is massively quiet at the moment, take him & you’ll go in a green area.
Hope he heals up okay.

HappyHammy · 17/04/2020 20:30

How did your ds get on. Hope he is on the mend.

Glittercandle · 17/04/2020 23:43

happyhammy thanks fo asking. The nurse did an x-ray and thought there would be a break due to the amount of bruising but it was all clear thankfully - DS is just very bruised.

The nurse was lovely and reassured me that bringing him in was the right thing to do even though he was actually fine.

Glad he is ok.

Wolfiefan · 18/04/2020 12:30

That’s good news. Definitely worth checking it out. That was a LOT of swelling. Hope he’s better soon.
