Appendicitis??????

DD has been suffering with severe abdominal pain all day. She was complaining of stomach ache last night and woke up with a pain like a stitch near her bellybutton. Then it got much worse and moved to her lower right hand side. Now she is almost doubled over in pain. What makes me think it's appendicitis is that when you press on her appendix area she gets a little relief but when you remove the pressure she screams. She's 13 so doesn't scream a lot. The only reason I'm wary is that 6 months ago she was admitted to hospital for 5 days with a suspected rupured spleen but it wasn't the spleen and they never found the cause. DD's saying the pain might even be worse and I have to say she looks worse, all pale and clammy. Then she was fine when lying down but when she stood up she was in agony last time. This is different especially with the pressure. What do you think???

Sounds like it. Can you ring 111 or go to A&E?

Wonkydonkey44 · 12/04/2020 17:09

Call 111 sounds like it.

eatanazurecrayon · 12/04/2020 17:09

I think if it is you'll want to get it seen to sooner than later! My friend waiter with her 13 yr DD and it burst. She was on long term antibiotics followed by eventual surgery once infection was under control. Though I understand that you may be apprehensive about going to hospital...It sounds like it might be necessary? So sorry she's so unwell. Hope she is better soon

GreenTulips · 12/04/2020 17:11

Ring 111 they’ll want to see her ASAP

Most COVID wards are away from the rest of the hospital

SaoirseTheLeprechaun · 12/04/2020 17:20

Yeah I think I'll phone 111 and see what they think

Good luck.

Lindy2 · 12/04/2020 17:55

Good luck OP.

We had the same last Sunday with my DD. I was worried about taking her in but we clearly had no choice.

For us the children's ward of our big local hospital had actually been moved to another separate building on the hospital site. They are actually using what is normally a private hospital for the children to keep them well away from the usual main building. It gave me some reassurance at least and they were very very quiet.

For us after blood tests and scans DD improved and they decided not to operate right now. I hope your DD gets well soon.

eatanazurecrayon · 12/04/2020 17:55

Good luck o

Chocolatecake12 · 12/04/2020 17:59

Good luck op. Hope you’re seen quickly and your dd gets the care and help she needs.

AmelieTaylor · 12/04/2020 19:20

Mine was like that. I'd had it out by midnight. Keyhole. Other than an occasional 'ghost' pain it's been fine.

I know it's a worrying time to be going to hospital but I'm sure they're doing all they can to keep everyone safe

Let us know how you get on x

BrieAndChilli · 12/04/2020 19:30

Sounds like appendicitis and I’m glad you’re taking her in. DS1 has his out when he was 8. He had tummy ache and was sick a couple of time so we thought he just had a tummy bug as he wasn’t crying in pain and just saying his tummy really hurt. By the time we realised something worse was up and took him in it burst and he had to have a month off school due to the the fact that had to wash his insides out.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/04/2020 19:31

Hope she is ok OP

Purplewithred · 12/04/2020 19:32

Phew glad you've gone, I was going to say A&E pronto!

SaoirseTheLeprechaun · 12/04/2020 20:02

Bit of a problem in a and e, went to Barnet hospital but children's a and e was shut. Was re directed to Watford! DD was in agony, I felt so bad. Anyway when we finally got there we got triaged in 10 mins and diagnosed her with appendicitis. They put a cannula in and are now running morphine. She is feeling so much better with the morphine but the surgeon is coming soon. Hopefully they'll remove tonight. I definitely did the right thing taking her in.

That's great that they gave her morphine. I remember being left for hours waiting for a 2nd surgeon to confirm appendicitis without any pain relief. Mine burst before surgery (is been in pain for 4 days)

Hope she has a quick recovery

eatanazurecrayon · 12/04/2020 20:37

❤️ so glad you've been seen quickly and she's got some relief

SirVixofVixHall · 12/04/2020 21:01

Thank goodness you did take her.
Hope she is feeling better soon.

They did some bloods when we arrived at the hospital, they came back almost completely normal but the surgeon says he's sure it's appendicitis as the appendix area feels very tender. He says that as long as DD's condition doesn't worsen they'll do the operation in the morning.

Thank you for updating us

It's been a tough night. DD got slightly better around 2am and the morphine was wearing off. But then suddenly she gasped and screamed. The nurse came and got the surgical team who did an emergency operation. Her appendix had partly ruptured so he couldn't do keyhole so she has a big scar. He managed to remove it and cleaned out the inside of her stomach to prevent blood poisoning and sepsis. They think they'll keep her in for a while and will give her IV antibiotics. I'm just so glad I took her in! She's feeling better but very nauseous and tired.
