3 YO ear wax excessive in one ear

My 3YO was poking his ear for a good few weeks now and I've told him several times to stop doing it. I've asked if it hurts and he says no. A few days ago I've noticed excessive wax in one of his ear and it had literally hardened overnight. It was very gunky too so I took him to see the GP who looked inside his ear and said there's nothing indicating that there's an infection and just a lot of wax. He said to just keep cleaning his outer ear daily and do not use cotton buds. But I cleaned his outer ear last night before bed and this morning, it was all crusty wax again. Would OTC ear drops at the chemist help with this? I'm quite concerned now. But if the GP says it isn't an infection then what could it be?

Yes I would get some olive oil ear drops. Otex make some. Can just be excess ear wax
