Intermittent ear pain

When DS, now 3, has a cold he often suddenly complains that his ear is hurting.

I've taken him to the Dr several times for this and they normally say that his ear is a bit pink but that he doesn't need antibiotics at that point.

However, I've noticed that the ear pain is not constant. It comes on quite suddenly and DS is in a lot of pain, but if I give him calpol then an hour or so later he is completely fine and says the pain has gone. He might not complain of pain again whilst he has the cold or it might come back a day or so later, but again for just a short time and will then go away.

My thoughts are that this is not indicative of an ear infection, but am wondering if it could in fact be a headache or some other inner ear problem that comes and goes.

Any ideas?
