My LG is currently almost 5 months old. When she was 3 weeks old she started to display really bad signs of silent reflux (choking, wheezing, cannot lay her down without her pulling faces like something gross was in her mouth etc).
About 1.5 hours after a feed she would also be extremely uncomfortable, screaming, when she was laid flat she was fine, but after I picked her up from lying flat she was hysterical.
She never really arched her back, but she would feed constantly, I mean constantly. I understand cluster feeding but she was literally attached 24 hours a day.
I am breastfeeding so went on an elimination diet and literally just ate rice for a week which made a tiny difference. I slowly added foods in and know I can't eat eggs, dairy, citrus fruit, chocolate, coffee, pepper and avocados.
She was still in agony, never sleeping but gaining so much weight. She was prescribed Lansoprozole 5mg daily at 4 weeks. At 6 weeks this was upped to 7.5mg. It didn''t really seem to make her any better and she still showed symptoms of reflux, waking constantly, shoving her fists in her mouth and still violently hiccuped and screamed after vomiting. until about 13 weeks.
My first question is... did the medication really do anything or did she just grow out of it? She has been on it 7 weeks before there was any proper improvement.
I want her off the medication asap as it can effect her intake of B12 and iron, and has been said to cause bone problems. I hate giving her drugs. We assumed it was the medication working so she has been on it ever since. Now she is older and has started teething she still vomits a lot, her reflux is no longer 'silent'. It is generally curdled and does not bother her. She never gets hiccups and she now likes to lay on her back. Obviously I am very happy she is happy but the thought of being on this drug for a long time makes me feel really terrified!
Have any reflux mums successfully weaned their baby off medication?
Did you wean when they were still vomiting? Could she magically become a happy spitter?
I want to reduce her dose but I have PND and PTSD from the screaming in her first weeks of life... positive stories welcome.
