Hi

I’m not sure if I’m being over protective.

Over the last few months I have noticed my daughter has wanted more milk than she was having. She was initially sleeping through then woke up wanting milk at night. Now she wants two bottles at bedtime and another in the night. I know this is too much milk and I am trying to cut down but it’s not going well. I didn’t think much of it other than the fact I felt like it was a bad habit that needed sorting out.Her nappies are soaking through each night, sometimes I change at night and they still soak through.

This week she has had chicken pox. She has drunk a lot and been very hungry. She went to my mum’s today and she commented on how thirsty she was. Unusually she fell asleep in the afternoon.

Tonight she wanted 3 bottles of milk at bedtime. She also asked to take water to bed. She wouldn’t settle initially and asked for water on top of all the milk. She is very slim, always has been. I dont know if she has lost weight. I will weigh in the morning.

Her breath smells sweet but not distinctive of pear drops.

I suddenly thought after what my mum said about her thirst today, about diabetes.

She is not grumpy or weak, nor has she said about a tummy ache.

Has anyone got any experience of this. Would it wait until Monday. I ordered some glucose urine strips which are arriving tomorrow but I’m wondering whether I ought to take her to a walk in tomorrow or whether I’m being ridiculous?

Yes my little boy is diabetic. Please get your child checked asap. If it is diabetes it can become very serious very fast. He had similar symptoms and no tummy ache or pear drops breath. It's just a finger pick to see what the blood glucose is. The Dr who checked my son initially said it was a kidney infection but he didn't do a finger pick. I was so upset when we ended up in hospital a week layer. We were very lucky as he didn't have ketoacidosis but it could have been so much worse.
