Blood test results

My dd had some blood tests done just before Xmas to check for coeliacs. Got told to book a non urgent call back which was two weeks later. Assumed that meant either further investigation for coeliacs or anaemic as she was a bit anaemic when younger.

Had the most bizarre conversation with GP where he was really vague and said one of her haemoglobins came back really low and he needed to refer to a paediatric team. He told me not to Google it. He said the paediatricians would want to retest to be sure as could be serious but he isn't an expert so doesn't want to say. I asked when the appointment would be and he said likely within 4 weeks and then muttered it's probably not life threatening. I'm in total shock and also massive anxiety. Surely if it was that serious they'd not have put me on a two week call back? But he wouldn't say what it could be? I wish I'd asked more now but I was really surprised.

He asked me if she gets regular infections and said her tummy aches (reason we went to gp in the first place) were most likely not related to blood results.

I don't know what to think. I just have to wait for an appointment. This call was last week so how long do I wait to follow up the referral?

Please don't panic, I know it's easy to say but if it was really serious you would have been referred/seen straight away. I don't think it has been handled professionally by the gp. Call the practice and ask for further details/chase referral.

Thanks Oldmum55.

It is hard to not worry. I can say my bloods got done, and the doctor rang me and sent me to haematology that evening. And even then it wasn't life threatening Smile I had low neutrophils

Oldmum55 · 15/01/2020 17:30

At least things are moving Lovingmylife
ClientListQueen well that must have been worrying! Your practice are super efficient!

ClientListQueen · 15/01/2020 18:40

@Oldmum55 the locum GP was... the actual practice missed my horrifically abnormal bloods for 8 years HmmConfused

Oldmum55 · 15/01/2020 18:55

That's worrying ClientListQueen! Confused

Lovingmylife · 16/01/2020 17:19

What was the outcome @clientlistqueen? Its just the waiting. It's causing my mind to think worst case scenarios. Not helping that my DH is working away at the moment.

@Lovingmylife I have autoimmune neutropenia Smile so I produce enough neutrophils but my body then helpfully kills them off (you had one job and all that!)
Means my immune system is rubbish

IsItLunchTime · 16/01/2020 20:27

OP please do not panic. I worked in a haematology lab and those situations which were urgent immediately were referred to a haematologist

Lovingmylife · 17/01/2020 07:24

Thanks @IsItLunchTime that's reassuring to hear. Logically I know that's true. But emotionally, I think I'll worry until we have some information. I'll try ring up next week for a cancellation.

I mean to see if they have any appointments earlier due to cancellation

Please try not to worry op. My daughter had really large lumps in her neck. The doctor said "it could be leukaemia". But then he refused to do a blood test as he wanted to wait a few week to see if they went down! Honestly I just don't think some gps know how to speak to people. The fact that your hospital appointment isn't for a few weeks is reassuring in itself.

Sleephead1 · 17/01/2020 07:34

Hi op I work in the nhs in admin did the doctor refer urgently ? Where I am the consultant triage the referrals to see if appropriate or they may suggest somewhere else would be better so that's perhaps why you are seeing a different department but give a ring and check. I would also ask to speak to the gp agsin to clarify but what I would say is if the doctor wants to speak to you urgently they will indicate that and we will try over and over again to get the patient and book them very quickly.

Thanks everyone.
