'slime' she says

My 6 year old has been 'clearing her throat' for probably at least a month now -not her words this is the best description I can give as it's not a cough. She says it's because there's slime there.
I thought it had become a habit but she keeps doing it and she says it's because there's slime. ?
I don't even know what I'm asking here I don't think this is something a doctor would even be bothered about is it?

Is it phlegm she's got? A persistent cough lasting longer than 3 weeks should be checked over

purpleme12 · 11/01/2020 14:51

Maybe it is phlegm. But it's not a cough it's more of a clearing your throat noise. If it was a cough I'd have taken her to the doctors. That's kind of why it's confusing me!
Do you think I should take her then?
No other symptoms or anything

Could it be a habit? Clearing a throat over and over is quite a common one.

purpleme12 · 11/01/2020 14:58

Well that's what I thought it might but the only thing that makes me think is that she says it's because there's 'slime' there. And there shouldn't be slime should there?
Don't know if it's something or nothing really

My brother did this as a kid from the age of 6 to about 9. He was doing this clearing the throat noise and mum took him to the GP as he described it as slime too, and they said it was a habit and he’d grow out of it . He did , but gosh it got annoying lol

purpleme12 · 11/01/2020 15:03

Oh that's interesting to know

I have tried telling her it's a habit and don't do it but all she says is about the 'slime'!

Is it post nasal drip?

I'd go to GP just to get her sinus and nose checked out.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 11/01/2020 15:05

Could it be a post nasal drip?

Beamur · 11/01/2020 15:06

If it's changed from the usual amount she could be noticing it more
Has anything changed? Perhaps an allergic reaction to something (mild) which is irritating her throat?

Aquestionforyouall · 11/01/2020 15:06

My daughter does this at certain times during the year. It drives me mad!!

picklemepopcorn · 11/01/2020 15:09

Post nasal drip?

It's worth getting checked out, she could have enlarged tonsils/adenoids or allergies.

purpleme12 · 11/01/2020 15:10

I'm not sure what post nasal drip means but there's nothing wrong with her nose.

Nothing changed apart from this. I have never seen the slime myself but that doesn't mean it's not there. I know when I've got phlegm it doesn't always cough out

I guess I could make an appointment I always just think they'll think I'm making something out of nothing for something like this

I got this feeling when pregnant and it was a combination of post nasal drip and reflux

Haggisfish · 11/01/2020 15:13

My dd has this and its acid reflux. She’s suffered since being a baby and now takes ranitidine which helps. Maybe try some gaviscon?

Bitofnamechanging · 11/01/2020 15:13

I get "slime" when have to much dairy. I was diagnosed as dairy intolerant at around age 5

Horehound · 11/01/2020 15:15

Post nasal drip is like snot running down from her nasal canal down her throat...

bloodywhitecat · 11/01/2020 15:16

Post nasal drip just means snot going down the back of the throat instead of out the nostril, as she describes it as 'slime' I would imagine it is thickened mucus possibly coming from the sinus cavity. I would take her to the doctor for a check up.

purpleme12 · 11/01/2020 15:22

Thank you everyone some things here I hadn't thought of

More than likely habit. That’s what my doctor said for my five year old. She does it less now but at one point she would periodically make the clearing throat sound for months. Nothing wrong with her health wise but it was a cold that kicked off the habit. It tends to kick off again whenever she is unwell but then it lasts ages, she just says she is clearing phlegm. Like I said though, the doctor said it’s probably just habit and so I try and ignore it now because if she is fine then I’m not going to worry myself.
