Lump on groin

Vercingetorixraktavija · 31/12/2019 18:34

My son 11 has a huge lump on his groin area. It's very puffed up on one side. First I thought one of his lymph nodes swelled up, he was coughing and had general cold symptoms. But today he has shown me the area because it was too painful. I have asked him if his can feel both of testicles since it's another thing I can think of. He says both his testicles are down.
But one side of his groins are really puffed up and really painful to touch he says.
What can it be? It doesn't seems as urgent as we need to go to A&E, so we are going to see the GP in the new year when GP surgery is open. He is eating well, and not too sick, except for the pain.

I’d call for medical advice now.

Vercingetorixraktavija · 31/12/2019 18:36

Do you think it's something serious?

I'd call 111 and see what they advise if it's really putting him in pain. I'd say maybe an ingrown hair but at 11 seems unlikely?

Vercingetorixraktavija · 31/12/2019 18:47

When I touched the lump, it was very firm, and about the size of slightly smaller than a tennis ball. He expressed a pain as I gently touched it, but unless touched, he seems totally fine, except for when he moves and causes him to have some pain. It's around the area you would expect where testicles can be if it was pushed up for some reason, but he says it isn't.

Call 111. The GP isn't open until when? Friday?

Get advice from 111 regarding whether it needs to be looked at before then.

Thank you.

Could it be a hernia?

Suzie81 · 31/12/2019 19:09

Sounds a bit like a hernia. Google femoral hernia...

Vercingetorixraktavija · 31/12/2019 19:16

It could be. We just checked on the internet that the lump on the groin can take 3 weeks to be referred to the hospital from gp. My dh is googling but ds actually says he doesn't want us to call anyone, meaning it isn't unbearable pain at the moment.
He let dh check his testicle, and dh isn't sure if he can feel it, but I don't know, he won't let me. So it could be a problem with his testicle.

I don’t think that should be an eleven year old’s decision. What’s the issue with calling gp out of hours or 111?

He could also be underselling how painful it is because he doesn’t want to see a doctor.

PurpleDaisies · 31/12/2019 19:26

A suddenly painful testicle needs looking at quickly. I’d err on the side of caution here.

Ylvamoon · 31/12/2019 19:29

Don't listen to your son! It's a painful lump that needs medical attention.

And i also believe it's a hernia- my DH had one and they can be easily "fixed".

Vercingetorixraktavija · 31/12/2019 19:32

Thanks Purple. I am having difficulty here, I asked dh to call, but he is reluctant on New Year's Eve, and ds too. I am not native English speaker, so I do hesitate to call myself, since I have difficulty explaining thing in English. But I may have to.

You have to seek proper medical advice now.

If it is a hernia, sudden pain is bad.

PurpleDaisies · 31/12/2019 19:36

You can’t use mumsnet as a substitute for seeking advice from a trained person. You have no idea about any of our qualifications.

This is not something to trust random posters on. No responsible medical person will tell you anything else.

Suzie81 · 31/12/2019 19:41

Honestly, a child with a painful lump on their groin and a potentially missing testicle is a&e

FlissMumsnet · 31/12/2019 19:51

Hi There Vercingetorixraktavija,

We're no experts when it comes to medical issues but we would always advise anyone to seek professional help from their GP or 111 or A&E.

Please do seek help for your son as soon as you can.

LazyFace · 31/12/2019 19:52

OP, your English is absolutely fine to call 111, as previously said it can be a hernia or something else that needs looking at. Please call them.

nocoolnamesleft · 31/12/2019 20:25

Please, please, please call right now. We cannot see your son over the internet, but several of the possibilities (abscess, incarcerated/stuck hernia, testicular torsion...) need prompt treatment.

QueenOfOversharing · 31/12/2019 20:42

My DS had an inguinal hernia - it sounds very like that. If it is, he needs to be seen straight away.

BabyST · 01/01/2020 17:21

Is the lump or swelling actually on his scroutim? Or is it higher near his pubic bone? Could be a number of things, Epidimitus, Testical Torsion, hernia? Has he had any trauma like kick or punched

Vercingetorixraktavija · 02/01/2020 21:26

Up date. Just back from hospital. It was some sort of twisted testicles and it was surrounded by fluid or something. It started to swell up and gone really red like it was infected. Drs did ultrasound and it was clear straight away that his testicle is not in the right place but where the huge lump was. Had surgery, and everything went ok so far. Just need check up in few. weeks time.
Thank you everyone. I'm glad we didn't wait until it was too late, the surgeons talked about possible removal of testicle as a worst case scenario before the surgery, but it seems like it was ok. Everything went so fast. If I didn't ask on MN, I may have waited until GP was open, and we may have had different outcome.
Thank you.

Wishing him a speedy recovery. Flowers

nocoolnamesleft · 02/01/2020 21:36

Phew. Sometimes mn can actually be a force for good. Hope he recovers well.

YeOldeTrout · 02/01/2020 21:38

wow, glad he's on the mend. Thanks for update. x
