Itchy head

DS seems to have an itchy head. I’ve checked for lice and there’s no sign of any but he does seem to have quite a few small scabs on his head. I’ve now developed an itchy scalp too which is a bit sore in places (maybe from scratching) and
feels as though it might be the same (can feel lumps on it). DH has checked my head and can’t see any sign of head lice. Any suggestions on what else it could be?

Did you check with a nit comb?

I'd check with a nit comb.

If his head is itching and has scabs I would be leaning towards psoriasis. I have suffered with this on my head since a child- best to take him to the doctors and they can prescribe special shampoo if it is psoriasis.

How hard have you looked?

Based on experience, I can tell you that a mild infection is very hard to spot. Newly hatched lice are very, very small. I found that I had to stare at what I thought was a bit of dust amongst the roots of hair and wait to see if it moved. I found two very small 'movers', which when magnified via a smart phone had legs. I couldn't find an adult louse.

The next day, I bought liquid gel to kill the lice and a nit comb. When combing out her hair, I found very few lice and eggs, but more than I had been able to find with carefully parting and looking. The unhatched eggs sit very close to the scalp and look like tiny bits of dust. I could really only see them, after wiping the nit comb on a piece of white paper towel.

The only reason I looked so hard was because DD9 was convinced that her scalp was itchy and that the girl next to her at school had a bad infection.

Thanks. I’ll get combing.

Newly hatched lice are incredibly small. I only spotted some on dd when she got them by combing and then using a magnifying glass...i could then see the legs..uggh.
