Ear infection-GP?

DS6 has had an ear infection (I assume) for 10 days, no pain but a smelly discharging ear. The discharge isn't letting up, he can't hear very well but he's not in any pain or high temp etc.

I can't get in for a routine apt until Jan 7th. I assumed viral as he had a cold the same time which is why I've left it thus far. Would you wait until the 7th if still happening or would you try to get seen sooner? I'm just a tad concerned as he has grommets so previous hearing issues.

Come to think of it he had pain the first night before the discharge so I suppose the ear drum could have burst (this has happened to my eldest but it cleared up within a couple days) but is discharge 10+ days later a concern?

Yes I think that would warrant a same day appointment with your GP. The ear drum may have burst. That happened with my son and there was loads of discharge, they checked it and confirmed his ear drum had burst and gave antibiotics, and we had to be careful to keep it dry/not go swimming etc for a few weeks. Went back about 6 weeks later to check that it had healed up.

Thank you. I feel so daft, it was only as I was writing the first post that I remembered he'd had pain the night before discharge and realised it must have perforated. My eldest has had it happen a couple times, didn't need medicine but cleared up very quickly but this obviously isn't.

I wish I had called this morning now, hopefully as he's not in any pain it'll be ok to leave until Monday, we will keep his ears dry.
