coming off omeprazole

We have been asked by ds's paed to try coming off omeprazole to see if he can manage without it. Just wondering if his symptoms will come back immediately if they are going to or will it take a few days/longer for it to come out of his system.

DS is understandably very anxious about coming off the drugs and getting ill again. I'm not sure if I can rely on him telling me accurately if his symptoms are back or not. Knowing him he will say that his symptoms are back within 2 minutes of missing the first dose.

I recently started omeprazole for myself for reflux (possibly hiatus hernia). Got an initial 6 week prescription, and due to just being too busy with Xmas and work I didn't get back to see Dr to review/get more.

It took around 3-4 days for me to start reaching for the gaviscon again every few hours, and around a week before the acid burn and coughing restarted. These symptoms are probably mild compared to your ds, but suggest a couple of days before he would notice.

If you think he would exaggerate is there a placebo you could give him (vitamin?)
