Freaking out - cold sore virus

I took my 18 month old to the doctor today who suspected he probably has a cold sore virus.
Some spots appeared on his chin after breakfast a couple of days ago and I put it down to his kiwi fruit. He sometimes gets a bit spotty/red after acidic foods.
The problem is I took him to playgroup after those spots appeared as I would never have guessed it was anything to worry about. Since then it has gone all blistery, oozing and crusty.
I am horrified that he has passed it on, especially as there was a newborn baby there and I have read all sorts of horror stories online. I feel so stupid and am panicking.
I wish I had asked the doctor more questions earlier but he seemed so casual about it (just another virus, give Calpol), it's only now I've researched it that I am worried.
What should I do? Contact the playgroup organizer to let them know/tell the doctor and see what they advise/stay off google to help my anxiety?...
I am so worried, I feel so careless and stupid. In hindsight, the spots did look bad and I joked to my husband that maybe I shouldn't take him to playgroup as he looked like he had a contagious disease. I just really thought it was skin irritation from food/cold. Why didn't I just keep him home, I am kicking myself...

Don't panic you are aware now of what the matter is , he most likely got it from there anyway! All you can do now is wait until it's cleared up and then he can go back.

These things happen, everything will be ok Thanks
