Babys belly button open?

Hiya FTM here,

Whilst changing my sons nappy (6 weeks old) this morning, I noticed that he had a small amount of yellow gunk coming from his belly button which smelt quite bad.

I cooled some boiled water and cleaned it off but whilst I was moving the skin of his belly button to open it slightly I realised that it doesn't look like it has healed and it is an open hole Confused

I see my health visitor on Monday but in the mean time I'd just like to know if this is fairly common? Why hasn't it closed? Has anyone experienced this? Just to put my mind at ease.

Thanks very much x

get him seen sooner.
gunk might mean infection.
I would call out of hours gp.

We've had a few issues with dcs belly button and we've been told that if we see any yellow/green discharge etc to get her seen, as it is a sign of infection.
In your situation I would definitely be giving 111 a call.
