DS (8) with poliosis and halo moles

Hi, my 8 yo DS has developed a patch of white hair growth in the past couple of months, on the top of his scalp. He is otherwise a light blond. I can see beneath the hair is what looks like a pinkish mark, a mole maybe, its difficult to see.

He also developed several halo moles (white ring around a normal mole) over the summer, and his skin is a little patchy in places, lighter and darker, over his neck and shoulder. I took him to the GP about the halo moles in the summer and she said it was all fine and might just be an indicator of moles fading. Then took him again couple of weeks ago to look at the white hair patch and he's now been referred to hospital dermatology.
Appointment isn't till early December and I'm trying very hard not to panic about it. I'm worried that worst case scenario it may be a melanoma, and waiting another month seems torturous. I've kept my worries to myself, son knows nothing other than he's going to see dermatologist...

Any one have any experience of this, and can allay my concerns...? Thanks!

Sounds like it could be vitiligo to me. Vitiligo causes white patches on the skin due to it losing it's pigment. The white patches don't have enough working melanocytes to give the skin it's normal pigment. Hair growing in a white patch of skin will also be white.

Can run in families but not always. My dad has it and I wonder if my DS1 possibly will too as he has a halo mole and a lighter patch of skin on his face.

I know this is an old thread but I just wondered if you had an update?

My ds has what you have described annd out GP had no idea what it was as he’d never seen it before.
Just wondering if the dermatologist was concerned?
