Omeprazole 5 year old needs increasing?

Ds is 5, he will be 6 after Christmas. He has been on 20mg of omeprazole once daily (morning) for a year. He was put on this because he had suffered for a long time with acid reflux, he complained of hurting burps and would randomly wake and be sick in the night. Up till recently he's been great, but the last 2 months or so he has been complaining again of the burps that hurt, he says he can feel it rising and coming up hurting his throat. He weighs 3 stones 8lb I am just wondering if he might need the dose upping, or maybe try another medication? Has anyone any knowledge or experience of this? Depending on which Dr we see it can be frustrating as one of them is very dismissive, I do wonder if there might be something else going on as he often gets one sided abdominal pain (I have mentioned this to Dr)
It's difficult at this time of year as if he vomits I have to keep him off school just in case its a bug, so I want it sorted really.

Go back to your GP and have this reviewed. The dose is very unlikely to be increased so if it isn’t working then that alone needs reviewing. Your little boy may benefit from coming off the medication anyway as there seems to be a link between a year or more of using this drug (or other similar ones) and an increase in fracture risk.

Thanks for your reply, I am going to take him to the Dr this week. I really don't want it stopping altogether though as he was really poorly with it last time. I am aware of the potential side effects but he was put on it for a good reason. I wonder if a different ppi will work better for him?

Hi, my son's been on omeprazole for over 10 years. When he was a toddler and his reflux was particularly severe, he was on 30mg a day. He was under 10kg at this point. He was under the care of a paediatric gastro whom I trusted. So it seems like there is scope to increase the dose. Like you, I'd be worried about why his reflux was getting worse though. Is he just under the gp or a paediatrician?

@LatinforTelly he is not currently under a consultant, to be honest his problems started when he turned 3 and I kept taking him but we were repeatedly fobbed off. Some other problems he had were blood in stools, lots and lots of mucus in stools, diarrhoea, vomiting, this went on and on. We were given omeprazole a year ago and then earlier this year we were told to eliminate dairy. He now has normal stools, no blood, and rarely mucus. But as he's had no investigation its all a bit hit and miss. He has gp appointment on Friday so I am going to ask for a referral just for peace of mind really.
