Help, have I poisoned ds?

13 year old ds has a bad cold. I remember for the first time that he can take cold medicine now that he's over 12 so I gave him a Lemsip drink yesterday. He said it was disgusting but worked so I said fine, take the tablets tomorrow instead. I assumed that would be for 12 year olds and over too. So this morning he took one Lemsip max tablet and then casually told me that the label says that over 16's should take 2 tablets and it's not suitable for under 16's. I'm assuming it's because of the caffeine in it which isn't in the Lemsip drink. Will be be ok? He's probably taller and heavier than I was at 16 if that makes a difference but obviously all his organs etc are still only 13 and not fully mature. He seems ok and I will get some cold medicine that is ok for 13 year olds before he needs another dose. I'm so embarrassed I didn't check the label.

He will be fine. He only had one.

TequilaPilates · 25/10/2019 09:51

What are the ingredients? Does it contain aspirin, which shouldn't be given to.under 16s?

elliejjtiny · 25/10/2019 09:54

Thankyou. Definitely no aspirin as I can't take that, it sets off my asthma. Just paracetamol, that long word beginning with p that's a decongestant and caffeine.

If you’re concerned then you could ask a pharmacist.

SoupDragon · 25/10/2019 09:56

Yes, a pharmacist is a good call.

elliejjtiny · 25/10/2019 10:17

Thankyou. I checked the Lemsip website and it didn't say anything about giving Lemsip max to a 13 year old so either it's fine or they assume most parents wouldn't be that stupid Blush

oh lor,
I was taking the cold and flu meds long before I was 16!! only way I culd survice as I had a shitty immune system and got every cold/flu going!! he will be fine!

Haworthia · 25/10/2019 10:29

So he took half the recommended dose and he’s only four years “too young”? Total non issue. No need to call a pharmacist.

SoupDragon · 25/10/2019 11:16

No need unless it puts the OP's mind at rest.

I wouldn't bother personally, but I wouldn't be worried about that kind of dose.

Wolfiefan · 25/10/2019 11:23

No “need” maybe but I know our local pharmacist well and they would be more than happy to answer a quick question. Better than a parent worrying.

sproutsandparsnips · 25/10/2019 14:53

As long as it doesn't contain aspirin I can't see why it would be a problem. I gave DS 12 pseudoephedrine (it said for over 12s on the pack).

dementedpixie · 25/10/2019 14:55

Maybe the mix of caffeine and antihistamine isnt suitable for under 16s. I wouldn't worry about a one off but wouldn't give it again

Loaf90 · 26/10/2019 16:55

He'll be absolutely fine!
