9 month old constipated

My 9 month old baby poos daily however the poo is very often hard/dry and is very uncomfortable for him to pass. They are often too wide hence why he’s in pain.

I offer him water/juice frequently throughout the day, his diet besides his milk is very good - lots of fruits and veg. Any grains he has are always the healthier kinds (whole, brown, oats etc). Sometimes bit of cheese, eggs and he loves yoghurt. He eats fish 2 or 3 times a week and soon be introduced to chicken.

The only thing I can think that is causing this is his milk - SMA pro stage 2... I’ve heard follow on milk can cause constipation. Has anyone else had this experience? How did you get through? Is it worth switching back to stage 1?

I’ve called my HV team yesterday and they will probably get back to me on Monday... but until then I’d love to hear some advice from some people who have had the same or similar issues.

I know lots of parents go through much worse things with their babies, but sometimes I have to hold back tears because I feel so bad for him when he’s in pain.

Thanks x

I would recommend a visit to your GP ASAP. Our son had this at 11 months and we had to give him a laxative until it cleared. It cleared in 2 days - explosively! We also got some advice on what to give him to eat (dried fruit eg prunes are great)

Prunes, plums and kiwis all good for getting things moving. Bananas and eggs tend to bind. Can't comment on the follow on milk

He doesn’t need follow on milk, it can be harsher. Under twos shouldn’t have wholemeal versions of food as they are too high in fibre.

Ok. Taking all this on board. - thank you

Lactulose is fine for babies and available over the counter for gentle relief of constipation. HV advice is not to use follow on milks, just stage 1 until switch to cows milk or dairy alternative.

@ShitOnIt78 Cheers! Will get some ASAP.

Does anyone know if it’s safe to switch milk (from follow on to stage 1)?

Absolutely fine to switch back.
