5 year old headaches

Last night my ds went to sleep at 7.45 and woke at 10pm crying that his head was really sore, I gave him calpol which seemed to help a bit, he was really unsettled until midnight, trying to sleep as exhausted but clearly in discomfort, I tried to give him nurofen an hour after the calpol but he wasn't awake enough to take it. After midnight he settled down and this morning says his head feels fine but said last night there was pressure in his head. He was pointing to the left side of his head kind of temple area near his ear, I asked if his ear hurt and he said no. Sun, Mon, Tues of this week he'd had a heavy cold and low grade fever which is almost gone now, he went bk to school on Wed as soon as the temp returned to normal.

The last few months off/on he has mentioned a sore head before briefly, only once have I deemed it uncomfortable enough to warrant calpol, the other times he's playing fine and doesn't mention it again after a hug/kiss. This is the first time it's ever woke him like this.

I googled of course and a brain tumor website said headaches should not wake a child from their sleep so now I am freaking out!!

I can't get a docs appointment til wed next week. Has anyone had experience of this with their small child? Pls?

My DS is very prone to getting headaches off the back of a cold / virus. However, if this hasn't happened for your DS before (and given that it's been going on for a while), I'd get him checked out. If there are no appointments available, could you ask for a phone consultation and just have a chat with the GP to put your mind at rest.

Thank you so much for reply, how old is your ds? And has a headache ever woke him from sleep? He literally was fine going to bed so it came on out of the blue. So you think I should speak to someone before his appointment next Wed then yeah?

@Nogodsnomasters Take him to the pharmacy and see what they think! If he is complaining its near his ear he could have a problem with his ear from the cold and its effecting his head.

Can you not ask your GP for an emergency appointment x

hjwt I didn't think/know the pharmacy had the equipment to look inside ears. He's fine this morning so I was going to let him go to school since he already had Mon and Tues off. There's no emergency appointments on Fridays as they only have one doc on and one nurse practitioner but if there's any further complaint from him I would def ring on Monday morn for an emergency appointment.

Can be caused by pressure on a (the trigeminal) nerve if its mostly at night or during after sleep. Does he have a lot of pillows or sleep awkwardly? If it is left sided it could be migraine related. If he is good at expressing emotions etc. it is less likely, but young kids can sometimes complain of headaches if they are stressed or anxious and are unable to recognise or verbalise it. See your GP to put your mind at rest and DON'T CONSULT GOOGLE! I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but a quick apt. is a good idea for reassurance.

christinamarlowe thank you, this is the first time it's happened. He sleeps with one normal pillow normally on his side or back.

On a side note, I'm getting him washed for school and when I cleaned his left ear he said ow! It hurts inside and outside if you touch it. Which jogged my memory that on Wednesday night he whacked that ear off our dining table after slipping down off a chair, he was red and he cried but no lumps/bumps/scratches. That could be totally unrelated but I'd imagine if that was the cause the headache would have happened wed night not Thurs night.

Got him home from school and he says his heads fine but his left ear does hurt now.

Never Google health problems unless they are very specific. Had loads of headaches as a kid, and I'm still alive.

Nogodsnomasters · 11/10/2019 17:27

suzi81 I've got health anxiety so my first go to is Google even though I know how stupid it is!

@Nogodsnomasters My DS is 7 and yes his headaches have woken him up.

Nogodsnomasters · 13/10/2019 08:01

Thanks, that is reassuring.
